On Saturday last, for instance, no less than 9,362 purchasers visited the sale. The name and fame of Fallon's establishment is spreading far and wide, and people are flocking in from all parts to secure some of the numerous bargains that are at present on offer. At Fallon's, too, customers and intending customers can rely on their requirements being attended to by a courteous staff of assistants ; the firm, indeed, is noted for the kindly attention it bestows upon one and all, a fact which is very much appreciated and talked abo nt by customers. St. Kilda Finances. Ths estimates of receipts and expenditure of the city ol St. Kilda for iq07-8 were laid before the local council meeting oa Monday evening last. Current rates are estimated to produce ^"21,682. the grand total of receipts being estima ed at ^23,117. On the estimated expenditure side a debit i alance of ^"5^7/17/10 was brought forward, and expenditure is allowed for the necessary carrying on of municipal works, such as street watering, road maintenance, pirks and gardens, street tree culture, ne* works, &c. The statement ends u'p with " contingencies, ¿"75'4/-." The estimates were presented by Cr O'Donnell, chairman of the finance committee, and after discussion, which on the whole was complimen tary to the chairmm and the finance committee, the estimates were adopted. j St. Kilda Valuation Assessments. At the meeting of the St. Kilda, connell on Monday evening last Mr H. M. Knox, valuer and rate collée-: tor, forwarded the following state ment I have the honor to submit herewith a return of the rateable property within the city of St. Kilda for the year ceding September 80tb, 1908, which shows an increase of £6.662 on last valuation. Owing to sub-division of some large blocks, the number of assessments has I increased to 6,086, as against 5,893 last year. With regard to empty houses, the statement shows 188, bat a very large per oentage of them are not habitable as yet, being in coarse of erection, and will j be occupied as soon as completed. There is a great demand for houses in St. Kilda at present, more particu larly 4 or 5 roomed cottages, which wonld readily let at 103 or I Ss per week.
