Alexandra & Yea Standard PUBLISHED EVERY FRIDAY. NEC TEMERE NEC TIMIDE. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 1910. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 25 February 1910

tnexandra & hela , tah dalid PUBLRIIED EVERY FRIDAY. NEIC TIEMEtIt NEC TIMfID,. FRIDAY. FEBRUARY 25, 1910. Tire report on the military folces of the Conmmonwealth., compiled by Lord Kitch(ener, has, excepting contli4ential details, been radle public. The report. tCrmbodies a schermo of defence that is, as yet, Ia little beyond our resources. The defence measure passedi last ses sion provides for the training of our youth from 12 years to 20; Lord Kit chener would extend tie compulsory systtem to 25 years. We are somewhat idoubtful as to the manner in which the compulsory principle will be received, but it is probable that a vigorous ap peal to Australian patriotismn wll en sire tile deired. results. Reserving tlhe compulsory training to tire densely .populatett portions of thei Common wealth Lord Kitchencr would have us secure a defence force of 80,000. men eOn a peace footing, to be increased to our fullest capacity in timeo of war. There is no (doubt that the. isolated pos...

Points of a Clydesdale Draught Horse. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 25 February 1910

Points of a Clydesdale Draught Horse. Some old friends whom I met at the last Brisbane exhibition, knowing that I took an interest in point judging, i urged me to contribute an article on the subiect, so that is cou!d be pro served as a permanent regord. 1 have selected for this paper the Clydesdale heavy draught horse. I may explain that the value4 of thU different points given are merely suggestive; dilferent breeders' associatio,ns may assess the values differently. A matter of great importance is the proper apportioning of the points so as to .uaure that' judges and breeders ;hall not overlook any one point, and the system must prove an education to young breeders I and agricultural students. For greater facility in closely criticising a horse the points are grouped. UGoup 1 relates to pedigree, and the points allotted number 16, namely : 1. "Pedigree''-To be viewed in the light of the standing of the horse in the stud-bhook. 8 points. 2. "Offspring."-According to re cords of pr...

Daringford. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 25 February 1910

Daringford. (from Our Own. Correspondent.)'. A serious outbreak of fire occurred last Saturday in the locality of Jerusalem   Creek, and caused a considerable amount of damage to fencing. Early on Sunday   morning, Mr W. Dooley proceeded to the scene of the outbreak and took charge of the arrangements. A report has just come to hand stating that the outbreak was well in hand. Last week, a resident of the Goulburn Riiver (Mr H. Mutton) had a narrow escape from being bitten by a snake. As       he was walking into his house after dark, he encountered a large snake on the verandah. The reptile savagely attacked Mr Mutton, who succeeded in evading it until he secured a stick and destroyed the snake. When the reptile was examined afterwards it was found to be an   unusually large one. Threshing operations are now almost completed. The yield has been satisfactory on the whole, and the sample of the grain is exce...

Correspondence. [We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions expressed by our correspondents.] TO THE EDITOR OF THE STANDARD. NARBETHONG RACES. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 25 February 1910

Correspondence. [We do not hold ourselves responsible for the   opinions expressed by our correspondent.] TO THE EDITOR OF THE STANDARD. NARBETHONG RACES. Sir,--I notice that placards are out for an afternoon's "sport" at Narbethong.     Now, Sir, you. are aware, doubtless, of the disgraceful procceedings that followed the running of a certain event on this course some time ago and the terminating point of what looked very much like a serious fracas. The policeman, you will remember, drew his firing iron and swept a number of cowards back out of danger. In justice to the women and children I draw the attention of the police authorities to the   fact so that the public may be protected from a repetition of the unseemly riot mentioned.   It is to be hoped that the committee and stewards will see to it that those competing in events will not be molested in like disgraceful fashion as was permitted on the last occasion. It...
