An Advertising Trick. [Newspaper Article] — The Scrutineer and Berrima District Press — 11 January 1893

Iu Advertising Trick. Tho confidence trick is a thing of beauty in itself, and tho different forms of working it are as numerous ns they are ingenious. To-day swindling is played in ' the court, the camp, the grove,' and in most instances it is played with profit also. Occasionally a sharper falls into the pit ho has dug for others, and the papers publish a full no^ount of his folly ; but for the one caso in which a swindle fails we can find scores where it comes off successfully. We hear all about tho banker who endeavors to pull himself round by borrowing from the safe and putting his money on tho wrong horso ; but the banker who succeods in his desperate master-stroke koeps the secret to himself, and possibly obtains a doal of hidos for his wonderful business acumen. In some instances tho modus operandi of tho swindlers is, intentionally or not, of such a humorous nature that ono is forced to allow laughter to take tho plnco of censure. Por ex ample, a Gorman editor, by way of pr...
