A Trip Ttaongh Northern Queensland. BR A SOUTHERNER. OOTOBEE 15.-Btcamcr arrived in Kcppel Bay to-day. Found weather very hot. Lauded at Bockbampton. Weather warmei and suggestive of India. WJiiskey sod iced tonic tlic only cool drink. Fuel myself in the first stage of a Turkish bath. Taper collar reduced to pulp. Sliower baths and punkahs recommended for all Government officcs. How do wliite men work exposed to the rays of the sun 1 TOWMSVIIXE, October 21.-By the poker of Socrates, but it's warmer here than down below-Kockhampton. No chimneys to tie bouses. Joints are roasted on the iron roofs. I'eopie seem to like iron cottages, which arc built on the camp ovcu principle, L'lace is one huge vapour bath. All the public bouses ore coiled hot-helk. Don't wonder at it. Women go about in patent canvas* cloaks lined inside with water. Awfully comfortable. Men wear patent refrigerating helmet^ packcd with ice, and lie in hammock* half Tilled with water. Weighed yesterday. Find I bave red...

STATE EDUCATION. TO THE EDITOR. (Gmcluded from, our last.) [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 10 November 1880

STATU EDUCATION. TO THE EDITOB. (Gmelutkd from, our lait.) Yocn objections to the financial nrmnfro , ments of the Department call also for an explanation. Luckily wc shall in tliis mat ter bo outside the rauge of sentiment. Mr. Lumlcy-HiU complained of the undue j)!0 | portion of revenue absorbed by the southern [ district ns compared with the western. Ac cepting the complaint you proceed to show how uujust the administration is. If Mr. Hill's statement be correct, you hove not gone too far. But you will see that it is not correct. The educational districts me not identical with the geographical or political ones. Care must therefore be taken in giv tag exact valueB to the figures of a bine book. There is in the Education Department no Western district. Part of Mitchell is in the Northern, and part in the Central. But statistics drawn up for the Central district are of very little assistance to us in making comparisons with the South. Just as the Northern district included Gladston...

BRISBANE AFFAIRS. FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT. October 30. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 10 November 1880

BRISBANE AFFAIRS. FROM OBB BPKOlAli COBEESPOKDEKT. October 80. Thbbb has been a regular stilting of the dry tones in the Legislative Council this week, SI members oat of a* possible 82 having been in their places. The oocasion of this on wonted display of activity was the new Polynesian laborers' Bill. Ttii more or less venerable fossils wlio compose this branch of the legislature are interested in -Polynesians as employers actual or possible, and they doht like tbe bill at all, especially the re-1 BtrlctionB it impedes on the employment of the niggers in the bush. So they have j gathered their dans and tie resisting the till as much as they can. The second read ing was carried, although there was a very plain intention expressed of spoiling the measure in committee. An amendment re moving from the operation of tbe Act all returned islanders was merely rejected by t^iB casting vote of the chairman. If it had been carried, it would have made waste paper of the whole bill. As yet, how...
