THE COMING ELECTIONS. (To the Editor of the Standard.) [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 26 July 1879

THE OOMING ELECTIONS,. , (To the Editor oJf te aSoadard) lSt,-May I be allowed to say a few words In reference to the elections shortly to take plsoe, when three members are to find their way into the Shire Council. There are, I understand, no lees than six caodidates, and I would like to give my opinion of enah, with a view if possible of inducing my fellow ratepayers to select those most fitted for the position. What we wans, sir, is men who will speak oat, no matter whether their views may be right or wrong, on any particular question. We have had by far too many silent members, and therefore I say let us have some new blood. Mr James Dunn no doubt has been a good member, acting honestly and fairly in all matters, but as he has openly stated that he was not seeking re-electlon, as he could not spare the time to attend to the business, we may very well let him mind his own affairs, and I think he will find himself at liberty so to do when the poll is declared. Mr Thoem, although a...

CHARGE OF IMPOSITION. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 26 July 1879

CIIARGE OF IMPOSITION. 4t the Prahrse Polioo Court yesterday morning, before Dr Embling (chairman) and Mesers Harris, Dixon, Young, and Hayes J.P.'s, a young man named Frederick Harri. son was brought up on remand, charged with larceny as a bailee. The precise nature of the charge was that of imposition, and from the evidence adduced in court it appeared that tile prisoner had been collecting money from various persons, presumably for a widow in distressed circumtances, by means of a subscription-list, but instead of handing over the money to the person for whom it was intended, Hrrrison appropriated it to his own use, and destroyed the subscription liat. - Mary Gray, a widow, residing in MargCret street, South Yarra, deposed that on the 28th of last month the prisoner called at her house with a subscription-list.to amise fends for a "oricket club." Upon being asked to subseribo a small amount, she replied that she was.in poor oircumstances, and could not do so. Mrs Gray added thats...

VINOENT BOSTOCK OR LiGHTS AND SHADES OF CHARACTER. CHAPTER XI. It's a cold night, said the officer, aý Mr Vasey stepped out from the Bostocks' hall. His companian vouchsafed no answer. but thrusting his hands deep into his trousers' pockets, began to whistle a rollicking air. I say, old flick, exclaimed Vasey suddenly, breaking off the tune, and standing still, are you going through Green Street. Yes, I suppose co, assented the worthy thus unceremoniously addressed. Why do you want to know. Because I have a friend there who will lend me what money I want. Silence was now resumed, and the two men drew their coats about them as some sharp, cold gests came up from the south, and frolicked round the corner of the street. Vasey stopped in front of the villa adjoining Mr Pryor's and requested permission to enter. The man, who was of nr. accommodatingdis position, said they would go in together. The gate was .apned with difficulty, and a good deal of noise; so mach, indeed, that before the...
