We admitted the erlle of constant, uninterrupted perusal of works of flofcion, and acknowledged that many of these wen frivolous, while others wen injurious and demoralising. Wo contended, however, that then were many others of an opposite tendency j that good historical novels assisted the reader to realise the conditions of society, &c, at certain periods, and that the works of our great masters of fiction might be perused (occasion ally, of course, not always) with pleasaro and with profit by the intelligent reader. In thus arguing we questioned the justice of a decision arrived at by the Tumut Literary Sooiety, that novel reading is demoralising, and have, aa a oonsequenoe of our rashness, received a letter from a member of that institution, in defence of their verdict, so long, so rambling, and so unsuitable in-aome respects for the columns or a newspaper tnartne writer must forgive us if ...

POLICE COURTS. GUNDAGAI. . Monday, May IOth;.— Before the Police 'Magistrate. : Archibald McDouoall was fined 10s. for being drunk and disorderly in Sheridan-street on the previous night. ' Alfbed Clarke was summoned by John Israel Hartley for breaking the leg of a cattlo dog by throwing a missile at. it on the 7th instant. Both parties reside at Coolac, and defendant, who admitted having' broken the dog's leg by throwing a stone which struck it, said that the animal was always coming about Mr. WoolnougVs place and stealing beef, Jjc'. Ordered to pay £1 as the value of the dog, and 4s. 6d. Court costs.

Tuesday, May 11tii. — Before tho Police Macistrate. and J. Crowe, Esq., J.P. Archibald McDouoall was again brought up for being drunk and disorderly in Sheridan street on the previous evening and was fined 20s. or four days imprisonment. John Mullins was summoned by John Clair for assaulting him at Jugiong, on the 26th ultimo. .
