^ . 1 Half Alive. It is a esd thing to pass through life only half alive. Tet there are thousands whose habitual condition is one of languor and debility. They complain of nonspecific desease, Ibey eufb?r no positive pain; but they have, no relish for anything which affords mental or sensuous pleasure to their more robust and energetic fellow beings. In nine cases out of ten this state of lassitude and torpor*arises from a morbid stomach. Indigestion destroys the energy of both mind and body. When the waste of nature is not supplied by a due and regular assimilation of the food, t-very organ is starved, every function interrupted. TECHNICAL EDUCATION. The following able article in relation to technical education, by Prof. Butler, of the Wayne county Normal School, is from the Pennsylvania Sxhoql ^Journal for February. We commend ft to the careful attention of our readers: The question as to the benefits to be derived from technical education has been put to our leading masters and men many a time, with always the sameresult. They have answered in its fdror and solicited its general introduction ; the investigating committees have recorded their answers and there the matter rests. If one "* asks what will the State, seeing it is a •State necessity, be willing to pay for this education, the general reply is that the people are neither ready nor willing to pay for good education. I cannot believe it. If the people are impressed with the importance of this education, and they be told manfully of the millions they pay for ignorance, poverty and crime, and then tell them the money asked lor technical educatio...

A Munificent GUI to Science. Some time since Professor Agassiz in an address before the Legislature of Massachusetts called the attention of that body to the need and value of a summer school for the instruction of both teachers and students in natural history. -He also suggested tbat, during the coming summer, a session should be held on the island of Nantucket. These remarks attracted the attention of M t, John Anderson, a wealthy and well known tobacco merchant of this city, who, with great munificence has donated an entire island for the purpose of the institution, supplementing bis gift with a fund oi $50,-000. The island, which bears the name ofPenikese, is of about one hundred acres in extent and is situated in the Elizabeth group, at the entrance of buzzard's bay, on the Southern coast of Massachusetts. It has been largely improved, and contains several buildings valued at $100,000, while the fertility of its soil is such as to render it posssible to raise sufficient p...
