Stone film commends disabled vet [Newspaper Article] — Collegian — 24 January 1990

Stone film commends disabled vet Entertainment "Born on the Fourth of July" celebrates veteran Ron Kovic by Robb Frederick Entertainment Editor Ron Kovic has spent much of his last twenty years in hell, and he wants to talk about it. In his 1976 autobiography Kovic, a veteran disabled in Vietnam, recorded the pain and frustration which accompanied his efforts to return his life to a state of physical, emotional and social normalcy. With the help of director and fellow veteran Oliver Stone, Kovic's plight has finally gained national attention through the film Born on the Fourth of July. The film documents Kovic's transformation from an obsessively patriotic youth to a militant anti-war protester, and the change carries with it few pleasant moments. Kovic is just a young boy enjoying small-time life in Massapequa, New York, when Born on the Fourth begins. While attending a parade celebrating the birthday he shares with a nation, he stands in awe as the decorated soldiers p...

Liner notes [Newspaper Article] — Collegian — 24 January 1990

Liner notes by Robb Frederick Entertainment Editor Hundreds of prospective actors swamped the Philadelphia offices of several casting directors earlier this week after local papers ran an ad announcing small roles in the upcoming Sylvester Stallone film Rocky V. Available roles included fight referees, pedestrians and cab drivers. Is a role that small worth the hassle? Before you answer, remember this- with a single line just about anyone could overshadow Sly's pitiful range. •Rumors have it that Bruce Springsteen and his girlfriend/ backup singer Patti Scialfa are expecting a child, but no statements have yet been issued by the Boss' management •The sequel-of-the-monih award goes to Leatherface: The Texas Massacre III, which opened last week to (surprise!) not-so-great reviews. •Chuck Berry is suing High Society magazine for printing photos of him posing nude with an unidentified woman. Do the magazine's publishers really expect this to increase sales? After all, Berry is 6...

Neil Young's Freedom mourns a wasted decade [Newspaper Article] — Collegian — 24 January 1990

Neil Young's Freedom mourns a wasted decade by Robb Frederick Entertainment Editor Considering the recent political upheaval in Eastern Europe, Neil Young's tilling of his latest release Freedom seems quite appropriate. The diverse material found on the disc, however, focuses more on celebrating Young's experimentation with varying musical styles. The tracks presented on Freedom touch upon each area represented in the spectrum of popular music, but the, work is united by an underlying theme Young relentlessly pursues- a great dissatisfaction regarding the accomplishments and setbacks of the last decade. The subject matter is gloomy and depressing, and Young's harrowing vocals leave listeners battered and exhausted. Young's most effective commentary appears in the song "Rockin" in the Free World," which he presents in two versions that serve as bookends for the remainder of the release. Like the classic "My My, Hey Hey," which propelled the 1979 Rust Never Sleeps, "Rockin in ...

Struggles continue with a home loss to Buffalo State [Newspaper Article] — Collegian — 24 January 1990

Struggles continue with a home loss to Buffalo State 1 Sports Men's Basketball Viscuso, Thrower no longer on team by Tony Viola Collegian Staff Writer After winning IS games last year and making an appearance in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference playoffs, the men's hoop squad has found several obstacles in their way as they struggle to find last year's success. A major crisis for the team has been the loss of junior guard Chris Viscuso and freshman guard Omar Thrower. According to Men's Basketball Coach Doug Zimmerman, "Chris Viscuso is ineligible for the year due to the university's policies on academics." One of the ironies of this story is the fact that Viscuso is eligible by NCAA standards, but did not meet Behrend's higher requirements. i As for Thrower, the seventh year coach said, "Omar Thrower just quit the team for personal reasons." Another problem has been the Lions' rigorous schedule, which has placed them on the road often away from the friendly c...

Lady Lions give a good effort, but come up short at the foul line [Newspaper Article] — Collegian — 24 January 1990

Lady Lions give a good effort, but come up short at the foul line Women's Basketball by Robert Kitchen Collegian Staff Writer The women's basketball team easily defeated the Blue Devils of SUNY-Fredbnia in "The Pit" last Thursday by a 64-41 score. Behrend was trailing early in the home match, but senior guard Lisa Dorenkamp hit two trifectas and teammate Michele Madison put in eight points on the board to end the first half with an eight point lead, 32-24. The Lady Lions played a strong final half to eventually win by 23 points. Madison finished with 16 points to lead the Behrend offense. Freshman Lori Nadolny said that, "We played well. It was a team effort and we got the job done." Behrend next suffered a 93-60 loss to a strong Saint Vincent team in an away game on January 20. The Lady Lions trailed at the half, 48-36, and then were outscored 45-24 in the second half to produce the final margin. Madison again led the Behrend scoring, this time pumping in a game-high 22 p...

Super Sunday is just not what it used to be [Newspaper Article] — Collegian — 24 January 1990

Super Sunday is just not what it used to be 1 Sporting View by John Musser Collegian Sports Editor I remember the good old days. There was a time when this past week and a half would fill the nation with anticipation and excitement. There would only be talk of who was better, who was stronger, and large monetary bets would be made. Plans that involved anything without a TV or radio in close proximity were quickly nixed in favor of those with a BIG screen television and tons of chip dip. Wives and girlfriends everywhere were momentarily forgotten. And this wasn't all done without good reason. In those days, you not only expected the big game to be close, you knew it. There weren't any big blowouts lames didn't end in the second quarter like they do now. Games back then, you stayed gi 1 to the set until at least the i rih quarter. And-« liked iL Now. s, things ain't what they us o be. The Super Bowl ha ome the Whats-on the-othe annel Bowl. Ok, last yea; ime was exciting. But...
