SHADY LAKE [Newspaper Article] — The Summer Kent Stater — 18 August 1982

SHADY LAKE Story and Photos By Phoebe O'Neil Set slightly back off of state Route 14 behind an abandoned castle is a small amusement park that has been named Shady Lake Park. Open for the past six years, Shady Lake is the home of many of the rides from the old Euclid Beach amusement park. Shady Lake, open Friday through Sundays, features a nostalgic carnival atmosphere with rides for the young and old as well as the daring and the timid. In the top photo, Michael Hatfield is engulfed by his hat as he braces himself for the upcoming turn on one of the army kiddie rides. To the left, a mother and daughter enjoy a flight on the more daring “airplane” ride. To the right, the paddle boats, a ride for all ages, move slowly around the lake.

Versatile Costello mixes styles well as Attractions roll [Newspaper Article] — The Summer Kent Stater — 18 August 1982

Versatile Costello mixes styles well as Attractions roll By DAVID SLUTZKY Staff Writer Elvis Costello and the Attractions’ superb musical performance was not the only thing that made Sunday night’s Music Hall show so entertaining it was the group’s friendly, affable and uncompromising attitude and concern for the audience that drew the crowd. Costello and company Bruce Thomas, bass; Steve Nieve, keyboards; and Pete Thomas, drums, raged through uptempo frenetics, weaved through slower ballads and sailed through some rhythm and blues, delivering a powerful and artistic set. The band played the bulk of their material from the latest Imperial Bedroom album, which has already been hailed as a critical masterpiece, as well as averaging about four songs per album from its seven previous releases. For openers, the band surged into “Accidents Will Happen” and “Green Shirt,” two songs from the Armed Forces album. From there, it scoped a wide range of material including a soulful and spontaneo...

Probably because Army ROTC is full of the kind of people other people go out of their way to meet. ROTC students tend to be high achievers who are interested in more than their studies. They’re popular students with a serious side, but who like to have a good time, too. In other words, when people join Army ROTC they often meet people a lot like themselves. ENTERTAINMENT 'Terror' Tabakoff to take her talents to Italy [Newspaper Article] — The Summer Kent Stater — 18 August 1982

ENTERTAINMENT 'Terror' Tabakoff to take her talents to Italy By MEGAN HARDING Entertainment Editor Sheila K. Tabakoff is leaving an ivory tower for an Italian castle. Tabakoff, who has been assistant professor of art and director of the galleries of Kent State for the past five years, will leave Monday for Central Italy where she has a home in part of an old castle. She and ten other persons bought the Gastello Santa Guilina in 1973. Tabakoff lived in Florence at the time, teaching art history to American students and working under a Committee to Rescue Italian Art Fellowship. The property, a walled village that includes eleven buildings, was restored by the new owners. It was built in the 12th Century as a military garrison to protect Perugia, the provincial capital, Tabakoff said. She now has seven rooms in one of the original five watchtowers of the castle. When Tabakoff returns to Italy she will begin working at the Pitti Palace in Florence doing research, publishing catalogues ...
