Johnson is about CO years of age . and childless . It is thought her irfsanity was brought on by worry over the death of her husband , and on account of the fact that her property , located at the corner of . First and Main streets , Champaign , is mortgaged . A conservator will be appointed to look after it . Mrs . Johnson has been taken to Kankakee by Deputy Sheriff Charles Vandervort and Mrs . Henry Hines .

THE STEEL HIGHWAYS Condensed News Items of General Interest to Railroad Men . GATHERED BY THE COURIER Doings of the Officials and Employes Along the Peoria and Eastern . The Wabash limited fast mail No . 5 on the Wabash railway established a new record between Peru , Ind ., and Danville , 111 ., last evening , says the Lafayette Call , when it covered the entire distance of 100 miles in exactly 07 minutes . The train consisted of six heavy cars of the new length , an express , three fast mail cars and two coaches . The run was made from Peru to Lafayette , a distance of 53 miles in just 51 minutes . It is all the j more remarkable when the facts are considered that the run west is slower than that east , owing to the unusually heavy grades over a portion , one of them being nearly five miles in length up what is known as the Logausport hill . Decatur , March 2 S .- ^ An tiation in the Easterly Camp No . 1026 , Modern Woodmen of America , came near resulting in the death of one of the members of the initiatory team and did seriously burn him . C . O . Whitney , a prominent farmer residing a few miles south of this city , wasbeing initiated into the mysteries of Woodcraft , and Jesse Dowell , the captain of the initiatory team , undertook to put on something new for the benefit of the rest of the team , and the members of the order , and the result was that he is now under th doctor s care and may lose the sight of one eye . During part of the exercises it has been the custom to introduce a certain amount of -horse play and at this juncture , while Candidate Whitney was blindfolded , Dowell placed a revolver in his hands and ordered him to pull the trigger . COMMENDS LABOR UNIONS Bishop Spalding of I eovia , a member ot the coal strike commission , preached a notable sermon at Washington on the labor Movement , lie commended the organization of labor as in sympathy with teachings of Christ , who , he said , had given the impulse to the great social movement which distinguishes our age , whose purpose and end is to improve the lot of those who toil , and , consequently , to the movement which has led to the organization of labor . Decatur , March 28 . —One of the most sensational suits riled in the circuit court of this county in years was started here yesterday . The property owners along North Main street in this city applied for and were granted a temporary injunction to restrain the mayor and board of local Improvements from accepting the asphalt pavement or from issuing bonds . WARNING TO CUBA i Secretary Hay Says She Must Not Amend Reciprocity Treaty . ENCOURAGING OUTLOOK . United States Minister at Havana Transmits Note to Cuban Foreign Minister . Washington , March 28 .--Secrttary Hay has sent a warning to Cuba that the slig-htest amendment oft the Cuban reciprocity treaty by the Cuban congress , even that which proposes to make its ratification conditional on the treaty going- into effect duringjhe current calendar year , certainly would defeat the convention itself , since any amendment must be submitted to the United States senate , and before that can be done the date fixed for the final exchange of ratifications , March 31 , - will have been passed . Mr . Squiers , the United States minister at Havana , has transmitted this note to the Cuban foreign minister , and he is hopeful that it will be sufficient to curb the desire to amend the treaty .
