Farm Animals [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 21 March 1896

Farm Animals Rye for Animals A Utah subscriber writes : Please tell me if rye is as good a feed for chickens and animals as wheat , oats , barley or corn . To . understand the relative feeding value- of these foods it will only be necessary to compare them on the basis of the amount of digestible matter which is contained in 100 pounds of each : CarboPro- HyWater , teln ; drates . Fat Eye I U . 13 | 8 . 3 | 65 . 5 | 1 . 2 Wheat | 10 . 5 | 0 . 2 | 64 . 9 | 1 . 4 Oats | U . | 0 . 1 | 44 . 7 | 4 . 1 Barley | 10 . 9 | 9 . 5 | 66 . 1 [ 1 . 2 Corn | 10 . 9 | 7 . 1 | 62 . 7 | 4 . 2 From this statement it will be seen that the barley is the richest of the foods mentioned , in protein and carbo-hydrates , but not so rich in fat as any of the others . The value of these different grains will depend greatly on the work of the animals to which they are to be fed . Foods rich in fattening constituents naturally are the most fattening , while those richer in the protein are more suitable for anim...

Practical Dairying [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 21 March 1896

Practical Dairying Dairying for the South THB South Carolina Agricultural Experiment station has recently sent out a sixty-five page bulletin on dallying . It advises farmers to start with a few good cows , breed to best thoroughbred Jersey Ayrshire or Holstein bulls and gradually build up a farm dairy business to replace half or all the cotton growing Industry . This will restore the fertility of the farms and the prosperity of the owners . The cotton farmer who sells a ton of cottonseed for $ 7 sees as much fertility taken off the farm as a dairyman who sells twenty-fire tons of butter for $ 400 per ton ; while the dairyman who buys a ton of cottonseed meal for his cows brings to the farm as much fertility as he will drive off in the shape of forty lire hogs tbat will bring him $ 400—and the manure of the hogs , as well as that of the cows . will remain behind . The bulletin gives full directions for selecting , testing , breeding and grading up the dairy herd , quoting liberally ...
