Beavers . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 4 March 1854

Beavers . Such is the sagacity , of the beavers ( which wo oxtract from Cox s Columbia ) that a tribe . of American Indians consider them as a fallen race of human beings , who , in consequence of their wickedness , voxod tho Good Spirit , and wero condemned by Him to tlioii present shape , but that in due timo they will be restored to their humanity . They allege that tlio beavers have the power of speech , and that they have heard them talk with each other , and seen them sitting in council on an offending member . Tlie . lovers of natural history are already well acquainted with the surprising sagacity of these wonderful aniinnls , with their dexterity in cutting down trees , their skill in constructing their houses , and their foresight in collecting and storing provisions sufficient to last them during the winter months ; but fow are aware , I should imagine , of n remarkable custom among them , which , more than any other , confirms the Indians in believing them a fallen race ...

Cheetham and Baylor .. ' .. [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 4 March 1854

Cheetham and Baylor .. .. This was a pedestrian contest between George Cheetham or -Stockport and James Nayior of Staleybridge , tho distance agreed upon being two miles , for £ 60 aside , Nayior to have 200 yards start . We did not hear a bet made . They went away by the report of a pistol , and for some time the pace was fearfully slow . On tho first half mile lap being completed , scarcely any change had taken place in their respective positions ; but when thoy had traversed a mile , Cheetham had increased his speed and gained upon his opponent , and had succeeded in reducing the distance between them to about 100 yards . During the next lap Cheetham more closely approached ; as , on its being concluded , tho men were not moro than 30 paces apart ; but the pedestrian just named betrayed unmistakable symptoms of distress , whilst Nayior appeared to be reserving his energies . On they wont . however , Cheetham , by dint of great exertion , continuing to gain ground , and ¦ When the...

It is very quick in motion , and haunts about flowers and fruit like a bee gathering honey ; making many addresses to its delightful objects , by visiting them on all sides , and yet still keeps in motion , sometimes on one side , sometimes on the other , _ as oftany rebounding a foot or two back on a sudden , and as quickly returns again , * -keeping thus about one flower five or six minutes , or mora . Sporting Items [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 4 March 1854

Sporting Items THE . WHITE ELEPHANT OF AVA . j A singularly absurd custom takes place in this country ( observes Mrs . Judson ) , in certain forms of political homage shown io a white elephant , an animal kept for the purpose , superbly lodged near thc royal palace , sumptuously dressed and fed , provided with functionaries , * like a sovereign , ( held next in rank to the king , and superior to the queen , and mado to receive presents , and other tokens of respects , from foreign ambassadors . I dare not attempt a description of that splendid day when majesty , with all its attendant glory , entered , the gates of the golden city , and amid the acclamations of millions , I may say , took possession of the palaoe . The saupwars of the provinces bordering on China , all the viceroys and high officers I bf the kingdom , were assembled on the occasion , dressed in their robes of state , and ornamented with the insignia of their office . The -white elephant , richly adorned with , gold ...
