$ clettcD faigceUattt ) . MY FIRST PATRON . An Artist 1 * Story . Candidly , now , it is not many years since in obedience to what I felt to-be » stroiix impulse , I determined to select « rt nai \ profession , and to render too decided bins of my inclination , an honorable means of livelihood . Seated in tuy atttdio , eugapod in putting the finishing lotions * to a small londncapo , of which a sSummw trip into Shropshire had furnished mo with a preliuiiuary sketch , I was wondering when the love of the profession I had chosen , and the time and labor bestowed npon it , would begin to bring back some substantial return in the form of patronage and commissions , when I was startled from my reverie by a hasty tap at my door , and a cheery voioo asking—Are you at home ? Oh , all right ! It was a fellow artist and particular chum of iny own , who , entering very unceremoniously , and somewhat out of breath , plumped himself into the only -vacant chair ant : at once proceeded with-r- «« ...

The Advantages of Having a Literary [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 6 April 1870

The Advantages of Having a Literary Wife . . I attend my wife to soirees and conversaziones as humble companion , and am introduced as the husband of Mrs . Searl . Coming home from town in the cars , some officious fellow with whom I fall into conversation volunteers to show me the villa of the distinguished poetess , and perhaps adds , They do say her husband is a surly curmudgeon , with no appreciation of her genius . If I venture to take a morning saunter among my shrubberies , I shall probably find some audacious tourist taking photographic views or gratuitously trimming my hedges . Ten to one , I shall next stumle on a newspaper reporter , who will take care to have me inventoried , in his next issue , among the fountains , alcoves , and other properties of the poetess . Only the other day our butcher s bill was feloniously purloined from the table by some memento-hunter . It would not surprise me to see it produced to answer the question ( only changing the gender ) , Upon wha...

Interesting Belies . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 6 April 1870

Interesting Belies . From tbe Athens ( O . ) Messenger , March IT . On Saturday last , Mr . Samuel Lindley brought to our city a large basket filled with bones—seemingly the different limbs of many bodies—which he had . just exhumed from a mound on the farm of Mr . Wm . Henry , in Canaan township , this county , near Warren s Sation . - The specimens of bone . were evidently those of comparatively small persons , and bore unmistabable evidence ot having been buried a long time—probably for centuries . Portions of the bone had been subjected to the action of fire , and easily crumbled into dnstat tbe touch , -while other portions were as firm and solid as if but recently stripped ot their flesh . aThese are unquestionably the remains of the aborigines who once inhabited this country , and the date of their sepulture can only be matter of conjecture . With these remaini were found two rings , about the size of a common telegraph wire , on which nitric and other strong acids bad no vis...
