When the Irrigation Act of Octoher 2, 1888, was under discussion in the lower house of Congress, the Belt con tended that the clause withdrawing irrigable lands under the survey from entry or settlement would prove a serious detriment to the West. The news now comes from Washington that Major Powell, of the Geological purvey, has sent to the Secretary of the Interior a list ot 1226 townships, or over 27,000,000 acres of land in Montana, Idaho, Colorado, Utah and "Wyoming, which he wants withdrawn from settlement under the Act of Oc tober 2, 1888.'
