THE VIRGINIA ENTERPRISE VIRGINIA, MINN. W. £. HANNAFORD, Publisher. There is plenty of evidence in the air that soft coal is going up. China's Boxers are bidding for another course of treatment by the headsman. Having painted Europe, Asia, Africa and North America a rich red, "Puttee" and Yohe have reached Buenos Ayres, to begin on South America. It should be noted that the 248-miles an-hour mail line between Rome and Na ples is merely projected. It will proba bly not materialize at its promised gait. The record-breaking trips of the Kron prinz Wilhelm may explain the stories of fastness on the part of the member of the royal house for whom the steamer is named. The heated debate at the convention of fire chiefs caused no alarm, because New Yorkers felt that with so many boss fire fighters on the scene, there could ...

THE RATTLE IN THE BIN. You may talk of your concertos And sonatas and all that You may rave of PaderewskI And the hair beneath his hat Yon m&y boast of Melba's warble:— But they really can't begin To make music with the rattle Of the hard coal in the bin. The world is full of singing, And it ever throbs and hums, But how quickly I forget it When the creaking coal cart comes. Oh, it cheers my drooping spirits When I see the chute go in. And I know I'll hear the rattle Of the hard coal in the bin. There are those who dote on Wagner, There are those who Verdi praise There are those who care for neither, But prefer the ragtime lays. But a melody far dearer Doth my fancy quickly win, 'Tis the swift and vibrant rattle Of the hard coal in the bin. —Cleveland Plain Dealer. Scenes and Incidents of Everyday Life in the Park of America. •frW, J. J. 11 ILL. 7 POLITICS SHOULD INTEREST EVERY MAN. By Marcus A. Hanna, United States Senator from Ohio. If you do not make it a point to interest yourself in politics—actively, I mean—to work for the best principles and to sup port the best candidates, you are not a good citizen. Your country is a collec tion of individuals. Its power results from the union of these individuals. Your country gives you tremendous benefits. |li It protects you in the enjoyment of your 1 life, your liberty and your happiness. It guards your home, your family, holds up high ideals for you and your children. What return do you make for all this? U. A. HANNA. Think the matter over. Do you hon estly think you do as much as you s!hould do? The government of your country begins with the neighbor hood caucus—the caucus that is held just a few blocks from •where you live. It works up from the caucus to the city, county, State and national conventions, from the township board to the United States Hou...

These animals are prairie dogs. Some -stand erect at the mouths of their bur rows, viewing the passing train others are engaged in feeding or running to and fro about the colony. The land they occupy is the broad expanse of level and slightly rolling semidesert country known as the Great Plains, a vast tract which stretches from the Rocky mountains easterly to the west ern edge of the Mississippi valley, and from Montana and North Dakota southward to Texas and'Mexico. The prairie dog loves sunshine and a dry atmosphere, and in ranging easter ly from the arid plains toward the humid prairies of the Mississippi valley becomes less and less numerous, till between the ninety-seventh and ninety eighth meridians he disappears alto gether. sfSSsc w, t... -i» ®r & :'i:t"* "J b** 1 HEROISM IN WOMEN. Students of Nervous System Say It Is Due to Impulse. Failure to Consider Results Drives Them to Spectacular Deeds— Tliey Act First and Think Soberly Afterward. Students of the nervous systems of men and women frequently have •called heroism—as it is generally ac cepted—simply a pathological indi cation of hysteria. The basis for this is in the fact that so often a person who lias no idea of the art of swimming will plunge into water far beyond his depth in the effort to rescue some one already struggling beyond his powers. The point made is that in such cases true heroism is not involved that hysterical impulse only prompts the person to the deed. All of which, says the Chicago Tri bune, points to the fact that it is much easier to become a heroine than it is to become a hero. For instance, little Mamie Milti more, living on the Dugdale road, near Waukegon, is a full fledged heroine because she chased a burglar more t...
