EMPORIA NEWS Friday, Sept. SO, 1870. For the News. . NOTES BY THE WAY. On our eastern tour we took the cars at Americas on Monday evening, the 29th of August, for Emporia. Left Emporia on the 30th in the morn ing train for North Topeka ; from thence to Leavenworth, where we crossed the Muddy, and ticketed for Council Bluffs. There we ticketed through to New York by way of Chicago, Columbus, "Wash ington, Baltimore and Philadelphia. "We arrived in Tama City, Iowa, about four o'clock on Thursday morning, where we spent over a week visiting among our friends and viewing the country. How greatly has civilization transformed the face of nature. When we left Iowa for Kansas in the fall of 1839, mother's farm then stood alone out on the wide prairie; now the whole country for miles around is fenced up into farms, . and dotted over with desirable homes surrounded with pleasant groves. It is being clad in the livery of an old settled country. From appearance I think that trees do not grow as...

EMPORIA NEWS Friday, : October 7, 1870. OUR 5 IT TREES. In nutting time these trees certainly deserve grateful mention, and mere ten der usage than stoning and clubbing. If the boys would only be patient till the nut are ripe for dropping, and then let the frost and wind bring them down as they do in unfrequented places, till the ground is littered, much hard work at pouudiog and tearing open the green, treacherous shucks and prickly briars would be saved. But the eager young titers can't "bide their time," and so must needs bruise and batter and maim every nut tree tbey come to, to get a mere handful, where by waiting they might have gathered a bag full. Concerning the demand for nuts, it is a wonder that the trees which yield them do not receive more consideration from us alL Who ever thinks of plant ing a chesnut ? It is taken for granted mat mere wiu always De me usual pro portion of these trees in our woods bv self-propagation. But with the present rate of depopulation, at no d...

It is apparent to the passing observer that the star of empire is rapidly mov ing westward r for age is rapidly being written upon that which, bat a short time ago, did not exist. The little hamlets and villages have merged into crowded cities. Thrift and enterprise is written upon the face of nature as far as the eye can reach. The ize of the boat wa about 50x300 feet. New York ia the city of our country ; the censna will show a population of about 1)00,000. Here the wealth of na tion! i brought in great ships. It is marvelous to behold tho-busy multitude on Broadway. The buildings range from five to eight stories high. They are bold and massive in appearance.
