United States land office offi cials are enforcing very strict rules and regulations with re gard to the payment of the sec ond installment on Red Lake In dian lands purchased from the government by settlers a year ago and in many instances the result has been the forfeiture of the homesteaders rights to the government for non-payment of the amount of money due as sec ond payment within 60 days af ter the first year has expired. One homesteader who brought in his money on the day follow ing the expiration of the 60 days of grace was turned down and the case will be made a test, all of the papers having been for warded to Washington to obtain a ruling of the'60 days, will cause & forfeiture of the land involved p,nd Hs reversion to the govern ment. According to reliable informa tion, the Backus-Brooks lumber company of Minneapolis will in the near future commence the erection of a large sawmill at Northome. It is claimed that the company has practically de cided to make Northome the location for a first class lumber manufacturing plant and that the mill will be about the same size as the Minneapolis mill of the Backus-Brooks company, which was recently disposed by them. James Anderson, superintend ent at Blackduck for the Thief River Falls Lumber company, was in the city yesterday and stated that he had positive in formation to the effect that the Backus-Brooks company intend ed to build a. mill at Northome. Spend Four Tiresome Days Mak ing the Trip From the Red Lake Agency. Tenstnke is in gala attire for the annual meeting of the Old Settlers Association. The town is very prettily decorated and every preparation has been made by the citizens of the place to give their visitors a warm wel come and a good time during the three days meet. There were many arrivals of members of the association yes terday, and a good many in formal camp fires were held at which the trials, pleasure and experiences of the early days of Beltrami county were recounted. Among the arrivals was a band of aged Red Lake Indians, under the escort of J. W. Speelman of Buena Vista, secretary of the association.
