But a few weeks ago the gentlemen who uow bit at the Capital at Richmond to pass judgment upon tlie laws of \ irgiuia, were energetic candidates, discussing before audiences of their friends such thiols as retrench ment and reform, good roads, and economy in tlie administration of the government. The tax-payers h&vo long known that they are tax-ridden, and in many cases to little purpose. The method of a...

CUTTING DOWN USELESS EXPENSES Never before, perhaps, lmn the retrenchment and reform spirit been ho thoroughly shown jib by the present legislature. It pervades and coutrols both houses, and as a result several State officers fear their jobs will be Bwept away, and those who are left are likely to sulTer a reduction of their salaries. It must have beeu a proud day for Hou. John W. Daniel last Tuesday, when the Virginia legislature, without a dissenting voice in either branch, re-elected him United States Senator for another term, and thus paid him unanimously the tribute, "Well done, faithful Senator." There is a fellow in New Jersey who wants his name changed by the legislature, No wonder. The poor fellow now goes by the name of Whiskers. 1 here were fifty-two divorce eases aired in the courts of St. JLouis in two days last week.
