Judge Thompson's Speech to the Grangers, at the Court-House in Los Angeles, on Thursday. December 4th. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Herald — 5 December 1873

Judge Thompson's Speech to the Grangers, at the Court-House in Los Angeles, on Thursday. December 4th. Patrontf Matron*, Ladies and Gentlemen : Are there no dynamic antagonisms iv the inanimate world? Is perfect harmony the universal law? Do all the elements above, around and beneath us act in platonic unl.ty? The lightnings that rend the cloud and play fantastically on the mountain top leave death and desolation wherever they strike! The storm that sweeps along the earth in all the pomp and majesty of resistlelss power, levels forests and breaks up the waters of the great deep! The thundering of the volcano as it belches forth its molten lava, is but the battke shout of warring forces! The earthquake shakes the foundations of the universe and divides In twain the crust on which we tread! The breath of the pestilence poisons the pure air and carries with it disease and death! In the animate but irrational world we find also irreconcilable antagonisms. Descending into the depths of t...

Manufacturing in Southern California. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Herald — 5 December 1873

Manufacturing in Southern California. m rupiy to tne can lor tne esiannsnment of madufac tures on this coast, it is constantly urged that the high price of labor, and the great cost of fuel for generating steam, will always make home manufacturing too expensive for profit; und we are constantly being reminded by eastern journals, that it will pay us better to buy our goods of them, and devote our attention to agriculture and mining. Such counsels .•an only be the result of ignorance or Interest. Labor is high in California, and we hope it may always remain so; but that is no reason why we should ship our wool, hides, and other raw material to the Atlantic States or to Europe, and exchange them for manufactured goods, paying enormous freights both ways, and exhorbitant profits to manufacturers and middlemen. Better pay high wages to our own laborers, and keep the money in t he country. The bugaboo of expensive jKiwer need deter no one from going into manufacturing. All over Southern ...

Temperance Societies. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Herald — 5 December 1873

Temperance Societies. There are two very flourishing Mete* lies now in Los Angeles all of whose members are total abstainers. The one is tlie Good Templars, who have a handsome hall lover Caswell & Ellis' ■ten, and the other is tbe Olive Encampment of the Champions ofthe Red Cross. In every town these bodies save hundreds of their fellow-men from the degrading curse of habitual intoxication, and render them useful members of society. The moderate use of stimulants is probably as great un assistance to nature as the abuse of stimulants is destructive; yet there are many men who cannot use the " good gifts of God" without excess, and it is the special mission of Temperance Societies to aid and encourage the reform of all such. Troy, ( v New York), has lately been victimized by a dead cat swindler, whereby that corporation paid several times for the interment of a dead feline, but this is not a circumstance to the way they went for a couple of lowa counties last fall. One c...

In this department is also an excellent stock of gloves, collars, gauntlets, handkerchiefs, socks, cravats, -suspenders, and the usual goods kept by houses in this business.
