In other words It's going to be any- body's football game. I am not a sports dopester and have never picked any games pub- licly but that Is one game I will pick right now. Here is my prediction. The Yellow Jackets will have that twelfth man out on the field with them. The Howard Payne spirit will be in those boys and because that spirit can't be matched anywhere I will pick the Keatonmcn to win. They can't miss now. They have gone too far and I for one think they will have the de- termination skill and strength to carry them through the Hardin-Slm-mons game with ...

December 18 1941 YELLOW JACKET PfWl Kr" ?SH I i ime Howard Payne opened the basket- ball season Monday night with a loss. Although the Jackets did lose they dldnt look half bad particularly dur- ing the first half of their game with the Bobcats. One thing not to be over-looked Is that the Howard Payne cagers lost the service of their ace ball hawk Slim Odell early in the game via the foul route. Another thing is that this was the first game of the season for the locals while it was about the fourth or fifth for the San Marcos quintet. Reserve power on the squad may be considerably shy of what it was last year but we'll take the Yellow Jackets to win their share of the games this year. The war situation has changed the bowl games up considerably espec- ially the Rose Bowl and the East- West game In San Francisco. Bowl games in the East will go on as scheduled unless some last minute changes are made. This column will go way out on the limb and hopes he doesn't fall off when he takes ...

Page 4 r ALFRED A e LIMELIGHT Have you a "flub-box7" If you haven't one you should have says Band Leader Benny Goodman for the "flub-box" Is the keystone of a plan Goodman has long cherished which If carried out will enrich both the United States Treasury and the pleasures of polite conversion. The "flub-box" was Invented a few years ago when Benny was appear- ing on a commercial radio program. It's purpose was to cure him of "mike" fright the old Goodman hoodoo. Every time Benny muffed a line or stumbled on a word of dialogue the penalty was a small sum In the "flub- box" a tiny caidboard receptacle. The box didn't do so much to cine h's fright because as time went on it became apparent that It could not bo cured. However Benny has sal vaged a usaful Idea out of his ex- perience with the box. He figures that-Mf every American family In- voked cash penalties every time a vc.bnl cilmc was committed there would be enough cold cash on hand 'o take caic of the next Income tax ayment due...

Pai4 YELLOW JACKET January 8 1942 ALFRED GRAY'S l e LIMELIGHT Hatchets were buried this week between the picture companies and critics who had accused producers of exciting the public to war through the exhibition of propaganda pic- tures. The Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America have placed all-out support to the government. In making the announcement Presi- dent Will H. ( January 15 1942 " HP CAGERS OPEN K?1-" 7S I KM ime By Coach Kcaton's basketball squad defeated the East Texas Lions in two games at Commerce during the holi- days that surprised everyone. In the first place not many of us knew that our Jackets were scheduled to meet the East Tcxans; In the second place the Commerce lads were sup- posed to be good; and In the third place the Howard Payne boys had shown nothing spectacular In their previous games although they did play good ball. This writer talked to one of the Lion sharp shooters be- fore the holidays and he said that they expected to have a pretty fair team. This goes to show you that you can never count the Yellow Jack- ets out of anything. They will win In spite of the odds against them. Our cross-town partner Daniel Baker seems to have one of Its best basketball teams In recent years. The Billies weren't so hot in football but they seem to have the spirit of the thing when it comes to putting them through the mesh. Thus far th...
