XL he dloinitu r i t (Etittes *nter, Inc. ONLY 15c FOR TWICE SER VING: SMITHVILLE, BASTROP, ELGIN and ALL BASTROP COUNTY THE NEWS VOL. 86. NO. 12 THURSDAY. MARCH 24. 1977 Landfill Delay Avoided THE COUNTY -- Reg Todd, aide to Congressman J. J. "Jake" Pickle reported to the TIMES early this week that what was feared to be yet another delay in the county's long-awaited sani- tary landfill had fortunately been avoided. The latest delay would have been the second to come along in as many weeks. Approximately two weeks ago the Congress- man's office received noti- fication that the Washington office of the Army Corps of Engineers had rejected a proposed lease agreement between Bastrop County and the Army. At that time the agree- ment. which would allow the county to lease a portion of the Camp Swift area for its sanitary landfill, was re- turned to the Corps' Ft. Worth office for revision. The Washington office ordered the addition of two recent environmental laws as conditions not in- c...

PAGE 2 BASTROP COUNTY TIMES. SMITHVILLE, TEXAS 78957 THURSDAY. MARCH 24, 1977 imons A Full Accounting Monday night the Smithville city ccwncil held what could have been their most important meeting of the year. It was the meeting in which the actual discussion of the budget for the coming (Heal year was held. In effect, this discussion will determine the tax base, quality of law enforcement, street maintenance programs, and other city services. But unfortunately, the TIMES and three council candi- date* sat in the audience vainly attempting to follow the proceedings. It seems thai Mayor Lawrence Skelley provided copies of the proposed budget only to members of the Council, de- spite the TIMES oral request last week for a copy of the pre- liminary report. After all of the discussion was completed Monday night, Skelley offered to furnish us with a copy "tomorrow morning." This really docs not help a reporter trying to follow the proceedings tangled with financial figures. Technically,...

THURSDAY. MARCH 24. 19" BASTROP COUNTY TIMES. SMITHVILLE. TEXAS 7J«57 PAGE 3 District Chairman Named Verlin Callahan of Austin has been named a district chairman of the Texas Beef Development Taskforce (BDT). a group working for a beef program that will raise S30 million to $40 million a year to improve the economic position of cattlemen. Callahan, one of 14 dis- trict chairmen in Texas, was appointed by J. D. Sartwelle of Houston, Chairman of the Texas BDT. He and county BDT chairmen in this area, to be appointed soon, will be conducting an extensive educational program to in- form cattlemen about the up- coming beef referendum, in which all cattlemen will be eligible to vote. The beef referendum is to determine whether cattle- men want a national self- help program. It was author- ized by the Beef Research and Information Act, passed by Congress in May of last year. If approved by two-thirds of the cattlemen voting, there would be a uniform collection of three-tenths of one percen...

JohnsonandSons in Elgin, has served on the Elgin city council for the past 12 years. Would you vote to raise taxes to extend or improve services? I'm not for raising taxes. I'm for equal- izing taxes. This is what I voted for on the council -- to get taxes on an equal basis. That alone will mean a sizeable increase ig,income. Are there any city services you would like to see expanded or deleted? 1 don't know of anything we could cut out. We need to improve our streets. We're going to have to spend some money on our streets. Our water and sewer inprove- ments are in, and now we have to start in on streets and drainage. Now that we have a good water system in, we can afford to put more money into our streets. What is your position on the following: Airport: It's OK as long as it doesn't put a bur...
