Some go to be part of the fellowship while oth ers take advantage of the opportunity to tan. Yet for whatever reason visitors frequent Streich Tennis Center this spring one thing is guaranteed: you're gonna see some good tennis. The Hardm-Simmons University Cowboy and Cowgirl Tennis teams annually make a run towards the conference title dominating ASC and previous TIAA competition in the 90's. The men captured the crown from 93-96 and again last May. The women won in 93-95 and repeated the last two seasons. Yet despite recent success many of this year's racketeers won't settle for anything less than an opportunity to compete in the NCAA's. "Our conference is always one of the toughest to advance on from and the tournament is as wide-opened as ever this year" admitted Freshman Megan Sutton. "We just have to focus behind those that have been there before and if we stay healthy and continue to play strong we can get there again" the first-year Cowgirl added. Coach Lance Drake has passe...

Monica Sidwell Invades Europe during Spring Break I just got back to Salzburg last night from my two weeks of traveling. It was great but I was ready to come home. I wore clothes several times without washing them ato cold food from my backpack and slept in youth hostels and trains. I walked almost everywhere I went carrying around a heavy backpack with all my belongings. You might say "poor baby" but wait til you hear about all the places I went and things I sawl I left Salzburg on Sunday morning with my roommate Julie and her brother who came over from Mississippi. We wont to Innsbruck Austria and went to an awesome zoo in the Alps. Julio and I had been there before so we had already seen the sights. We mainly wanted to go to the Alpenzoo. There was not much to do because most places are closed on Sundays. On Monday morning we went to Zurich Switzerland for a few hours. We saw St. Peter's Cathedral which has the biggest clockface in Europe. We also saw some other beautiful cathedr...

Changing of the Guard Dr. Hall to step down as HSU president in 200 1 Heather Smoot Staff Writer On May 31 2001 Dr. Lanny Hall will step down as presi dent of Hardin-Simmons University and executive vice president and chief academic officer Dr. W. Craig TAirncr will assume the presidency. Hall will teach six hours of political science andor leadership classes in the fall of 2001. The rest of his time will involve fund-raising for the uni- versity. Editorial Ignorance isn't Eric Mears Staff Writer The other day was walking to the cafeteria for another one of Hardin-Simmons' infa: mous gourmet meals when a group of freshman came toward me on the side- walk. They were having a conversation about their classes and I heard one of them remark as I went by "I wasn't alive 100 years ago. I don't care what hap- pened." This perplexed mc for a minute and then I started to think. The more I thought about it the more it bothered mc. For about twenty years our parents and grandparents have told us that we "arc the future of America." For twenty years it has been implanted in our minds to take on tomorrow head-on. But how can we take on tomorrow and be ignorant about yesterday? The truth is simply wc can't. Unlike those investment ads on TV and radio past performance docs indicate future growth when it comes to our soci- ety. There have been many struggles in the past that we must learn from if we want to better our society. The struggles ...

k"-:. Something To M About Renovations bring new life to campus Lately the HSU campus is buzzing with much excitement and activity. As new and returning students begin their new schedules the campus grounds around them are beginning to take new shape. Several new improvements have been made and are being made in order to better accommodate and instruct stu- Keliah Castellon Staff Writer dents. These facelifts include bookstore renovation new student computers a new language laboratory a new missions center and music hall expansion. As Moody Center the student building rumbled this sum- mer with sounds of construction and renovation throughout the building the bookstore staff experienced an adventure of their own. While renovations were being made to the terrace directly above an unusual event (for Abilene) occurred. It rained. The downpour drenched the whole store. The bookstore lovingly recalls the eventful day as the "Great Flood." J.T. Box the store manager had plans for renovati...

roombreezeway several offices and a missions information room (comprised of about three computers where students can learn about graduates in the field of ministry). Palmer McCown the Hardin-Simmons BSM director is excited about future work to come out of the new space but states that more importantly this new center represents "the idea of the school's commitment to missions spiritual growth and outreach." The BSM paraprofessional Melisa Izaguirre hopes that more room will produce more student interest. She expressed the hope that since the BSM building will be "put on the HSU map" stu- dents will be more attracted to come and find out more about the organization. Last but not least in the Moody Center the basement lounge next to the bowling alley has been converted into a small new computer lab filled with twelve new computers. These PC's access Internet e-mail and other standard programs for students. For lab hours see Sue Robinson in Tim McCarrey's office. On the other side of c...

Jennifer Miers Staff Writer From Paydays to Nerds candies were represented by groups of new students coming to HSU for New Student Orientation. By various activ- ities the families not only grew closer but this also gave them a chance to to know the campus better. "This is the best New Student Orientation I have ever been a part of" stated Jeramv Chapman. Jeramy has served on the steering committee for the past two years and led a family group the previous two years. In early January the steering committee began preparation for Orientation. They added new events this year such as a community ser- vice project and the HSU coffee houses. One event that will never change is the ever-popular mud bowl. "I've never done anything like that! It was my favorite activity at Orientation" smiles freshman Amy Skeen. Planned activities in the rodeo arena of HSU that turn into an all out mud fight seem to be the highlight of Orientation each year. Along with the traditions came the beanies! This i...

UHMLUH ill 1 1 Have Sword Will Travel-Antonio Bandares and Co. get medieval. After a series of delays Touchstone has finally decided to release The 13th Warrior a semi-new film starring Antonio Bandares. The movie was complet ed over a year ago but apparently dissatisfied with director John McTiernan's Die Hard The Hunt for Red October) cut co-producer Michael Crichton (whose novel Eaters of the Dead was the inspiration for the film) re- shot and re-edited a number of scenes. (McTicrnan went on to shoot The Thomas Crown Affair a much much better film which was released three weeks prior to The 13th Warrior.) This after-the-fact tinkering is nothing new in Hollywood and unfortunately it will most likely continue. I'd be interest ed in seeing McTiernan's original version because I can't imagine it being much worse than the released cut. As it stands' The 13th Warrior is at best a series of stylistic yet surprising ly boring action sequences (save a decent climactic battle) carelessly ...

The four piece band Some Time After has made some noise in its first year of existence. The group comprised of four Hardin-Simmons students has created an energizing combination of sounds and lyrics. PJ. Beaver and Matthew Vermillion both play guitar and share vocals. Brandon Peterson han dles the beats. Jason Tantaros plays the bass and adds dramatic vocal expres sions. The band was formed as the guys felt the calling to use their talents to devel- op a ministry. "When you arc called to do something you have to have faith to do it" says Vermillion. Some Time After describes their sound as emo pop. "Emo" generally describes music that is extremely emotional in nature and is char- acterized by buzzing distortion and thoughtful lyrics. Alternative influ ences from bands such as Sunny Day Real Estate Pop Unknown and Hum have all provided musical inspiration that is key to the fla- vor of Some Time After's sound. The group admits that their individual music inter ests and life experienc...

9V My Hqrse Sports Dr. The new school year has just begun and expectations are already burstin' through the ceiling for our sports teams. You can bet-your-bottom-dollar that the Sports Doctor is hyped about the upcoming year and will be all over it like Tyson on Holyfield's ear. a mmmmm mmmsrn mmSma&N EMBBSSsm i MtBrriiilMAlnrSMrlN mmmmmsmm MMtti Qfk flhtfy &SxJ I John Mark Tittsworth Staff Writer Since my arrival at HSU this year I have been led to pray for revival. The kind for which I pray is not just a new excitement; I am praying for a revival of holiness among God's people on this campus. My primary role is prayer. However given this opportunity I believe God desires that I encourage you to take part. Though revival is a corporate phenomenon I believe it begins with the individual. In order to renew holiness we must live in humility and I don't mean mere modesty. Humility is the attitude we have when we properly sec ourselves in relation to our Almighty Father. We tend to forget that God is vastly different from us. "I am God and there is no other; I am God and there is none like me" (Isaiah 46:9). He is holy in that He is self-existent separate from all else and perfect. He is glorious in that He is infinitely valuable and the most imminent i...

Return home sends writer mother into frenzy -Lr' By Laine Walker Editor-In-Chief Weird things happen when a young adult leaves the "nest" for college. Rooms arc rearranged pictures rehung and high school mem- orabilia mysteriously disappears. My friends told me horror stories of returning home to find their room methodically reinvented as an extra bath- room or a sun deck. I laughed off their warnings to explain that my mother had kept my room exactly the same way since the day I left for HSU. By my estimation she probably always would. My mother after all was one of 'those." You know the women that turn a frightfully yellow color at the mere mention of a junk drawer. When I was growing up one speck of dust on the carpet meant the entire house had to be vacuumed and not the 20 minute "quickie" my brother performed. Crumbs on the counter signified the need for the entire kitchen to smell like Clorox. And making our beds was a ritual performed out of fear nothing more. So when I retur...

Students will not only be able to use their student identification cards ID for the HSU dining and the campus library but they will also in the very near future be able to use their card for much more. Starting September 27 1999 and ending October 1 1999 all students and faculty are required to obtain their ID cards in the Johnson Building Multipurpose Room. This will be where students have their ID pictures taken and their cards made. HSU Information Systems will run the new system. a a....'- wWM0 By Jamie Cameron Staff Writer College students are con tinually asked "So what is your major?" For most this seems like a simple ques- tion that requires a simple reply. Yet for the remaining that still have to decide on a concentrated course of study the question looms overhead. Hardin- Simmons University has recently estab- lished the Mclntyre Academic Foundation Advising Center to assist students in decid- ing on a major. The Advising Center serves students who have not decided on a major who are in the process of making a change in majors or are classified as a provisional ' student. A student must recieve credit for six hours of work before being admitted to University under the provisional plan. Gracie Carroll the coordinator of the Advising Center described it as "a home- base for students who don't know where to iw mm JllBnHBtlBJE iiiiiiiHllliiRRI'Ci Dorrie Cook and Sarah Jones go."
