THORNTON-ACHERON VALLEY DEFEAT MANSFIELD. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton, Taggerty and Acheron Express — 18 May 1951

THORNTON-ACHERON VALLEY DEFEAT .MANSFIELD. Thornton journeyed to Mansfield, to play before the biggest= crovwdmem bers had seen on the ground. The arena, which had recently been topped dressed, although a little on the heavy side was in good order. In the game, which had the hall marks of a final, Thornton, due to a brilliant third quarter, defeated the strong Mansfield side. Thornton's accuracy in front of goal, their strong ground play and backing up more than equal iscd the brilliant aerial work of the Mansfield high fliers, led by former Essendon champion Ted Leehane. Theo Greenlands has the Thornton team in first-class physical fitness, and great credit is due to the coach for his manner of training the Thornton eighteen. This was evident through out the day's play, when after an even first half Thornton went on to victory... In the original team Frank Egan was unable to play, and Geo. Deas went in as full forward; to kick 5.3 and be instrumental in many other scoring shots, He...

ALEXANDRA DOWN TO SEYMOUR. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton, Taggerty and Acheron Express — 18 May 1951

ALEXANDRA DOWN TO SEYMOUR. Seymour ran all over the locals in the last quarter last Saturday,. and increased their lead of 2.5 at three quarter time to 9 goals at the final bell. Superior ruck work and :high marking won the day. They were also a fitter team, and towards the end of the game many Alexandra players could hardly raise a'gallop. The game emphasised the' lack of, a couple of big followers:. -The fact. that Lyn Stillman and Jackl Butler were taking turn about at full forward. and ruck shows how short they are in that department. However, the return of Vic Hewitt was pleising, and when; Jack L:a: recovers from a leg injury the position will be somewhat better,; Vic Hewitt proved that he was still the "old reliable," and was quickly in the picture with nice marking. The umpire twice penalized Alexan dra by bringing the ball back after the Seymour player had encroached over the mark. In both instances the ball had been marked downfield by team mates, and the decision should h...
