Achievements for Wagers. The old magazines are full of gos- siping paragraphs relating to achieve- ments performed to decide wagers. Walking feats are among the most numerous oí these-generally, an undertaking to cover a certain num- ber of miles in a certain time. In 1772 Foster Powell achieved a work which was much admhed at the time-that of walking from London to York, and back, in six days. Those who know the road may ieel an interest in tracing him on his lourney. He walked from London to Stamford, 83 miles, on the first day ; to Doncaster. 72 miles, on the second; to York, 37 miles, and 22 miles back to Fenybridge, on the third ; to Grantham, 65 miles on the fourth ; to Eaton, 54 miles, on the fifth ; and the final spin of 56 miles on the sixth-making a total of 394 miles between Monday morning and Saturday night, and winning a wager of a hundred guineas. The reign of George III. was plentifully strewn with such ex- amples., A few years after Powell's achievement, above descri...

Progress Obstrueted. (From the Bendigo Advertiser.) [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 20 March 1875

Progress Obstructed.   (From the Bendigo Advertiser.) Through the di^cov^ry of g.Od a population was Attracted to the Ans* tralitin colonies, such us rimy would nut otherwise have received probably for another century, even if theil. Nothing, in fact, but the s'ldden And contem- poraneous revelation of the treasures of Ballarat, Mount Alexander, and Bendigo, could have caused the migration hither, which took place some twenty years ago from all parts of the earth. But for this " accident of an accident," the peopling of these countries 'could only have pro* grossed in a vory slow and uncer- tain mnnner. and the redemption of a great wilderness must have remained to be accomplished in some future ages. The Late Mr. Permain. [COMMUNICATED.] [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 20 March 1875

The Late Mr. Permain, [COMMUNICATED. ] The probability of ever seeing Mr. Permain again alive is now exceedingly small. It appears more than probable that he and Borradaile were murdered by the Alligator blacks near Mount Tor, the particulars of which so far as are known we refer to in our local intelligence. Not much is known of the history of Mr. Permain, although it appears to have been an adventurous one. Born in Ire- land, he was early taken to the East Indies, where he was educated, and learned   the profession of a surveyor, and for many years held an honorable position in the Indian Survey Department, and was employed in the trigonometrical survey of that country, chiefly in the highlands and   jungle, where he had many adventures in hunting and travelling, of which he was always exceedingly fond. Having a severe attack of jungle fever, he applied for leave of absence, and afterwards for his discharge ; he then settled in Victoria, where he was well...
