A Warning to Mothers. [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Figaro and Punch — 19 December 1885

A Warning to Mothers. Match eating has taken the place of match making, which was lately so much in vogue in Maryborough. First, James Sim, of Dun&athu, loses a child who had swallowed sufficient phosphorus to kill a man ; and medico Harriets, who was attending the youngster, is called away suddenly to look after his own little girl, who had swallowed the heads of twenty-seven lucifera. The doctor thought that he had dealt the remedy in time, but his child oaly survived a week and then died. The day on which Hamcks' child died, E. A. Hyde's wee girl of a year old keeps the pot boiling by swallowing a dose of carbolic acid. It still lives. The old story—careless servant girl, • : ♦ . : An old chum writes me:—Some two years since, Queensland Punch favored its readers with an account of Burketown in the old days, and it is probably thought that, as civilisation has now reached most outside towns, there is little of unusual interest goes on here; however, this is not the case. I...

What is it? [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Figaro and Punch — 19 December 1885

What is it? I often wonder on what basis the representatives of the Government on school committees are chosen. Is it profound knowledge ? Is it great powers of organising ?. Or is it only, after all, merely a political plum given to party adherents who sigh for any distinction ? I am glad, however, to be able to quote an instance where the choice has fallen on profound knowledge. Up Mar^boi-ough way, during a recent prize-giving racket, one of the School Trustees, whose corporeal magnificence makes the butchers meat of the "present time blush on. its hooks, while puffily handing a music prize to one of the girls, said that she had made wonderful " process, considering the short institution she had had." Inflammation now reaches me that the girls digest getting up a perdition to the Minister of Adulation asking, that before persons are disappointed on the school committee, they should first be put through a precriminary extermination. I cannot help think* ing that the girls are crue...

Brisbane Tattersall's Club Spring Meeting DECEMBER 10 AND 12, 1885. [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Figaro and Punch — 19 December 1885

Brisbane Tattersall's Club Spring Meeting December 10 and 12, 1885. President: J. M. Lennan, Esq,; Vice-President: J. Mullin, Esq.; Jud^e: J. M'Lennan, Esq.; Starter: Dr. Power; Clerk f of tbe Course, Chinery, Esq.; Secretary, B. Bently, Esq. First Day (Thursday). Although the fete day of the colony had been ap propriated by more than one sporting club for the annual holiday, the attendance at Eagle Farm was scarcely less than on the Prince's birthday, though the softer sex was hardly so well represented, numerically, and this was, no doubt, due to the dust on the road, thanks to the chivalrous courtesy of the mayor, who, for no reason whatever, refused the committee the use of the idle watercarts. A disingenuous critic would say " that no attempt had been made by the committee to water the road,'* but as I have no chronic grudge as yet against Tattereall's Club, I can, without doing violence to my own pet grievance, acquit them of all blame in the matter. Every effort, in fact, was...

No title [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Figaro and Punch — 19 December 1885

Most of the Northern towns have their nick names ; as "Sin, Sweat, and Sorrow;" "Sleepy Hollow" Bocks and Goats," and so on. There is one, which, unless the police bestir themselves pretty soon to some purpose, will tower above all those under the name of " Bough and. Tumble." The name of the place is only a miner consideration, so long as it has its usual Sunday prize-fight. The advent of one of the pugnacious, who calls himself " The Messer," was hailed with delight the other day by a certain section of the community. I hope to hear soon that he is a messee, and that the opera tion that made him so will be about the last of the sort. Kilts are very picturesque articles of furniture, and the members of the Townsville Caledonian Society in Townsville who sported them at the late concert there, looked right gallant fellows—inside them, I was going to say, but among them would probably be a more correct expression. But the Hielan' costume looks out of place in Flinders-street. Yes., s...

Notice to the Public.—Please to note my time of Publishing s 9 a.m. every Friday. . An aboriginal, named Mitch er Ord, Jias been charged at the Ipswich Criminal Sittings with stealing a purse of money, at Esk. Miteher was drunk when he committed the theft, fcr which, being Sober, he said he was sorry. No doubt he was, seeing that it got him into limbo. He was sentened to twelve months' imprisonment, and is still more regretful. The new Post and Telegraph Office at Tambo will be completed in a fortnight. From the first cwt. of stone obtained on the Croydon goldfield, a piece, weighing twenty-eight pounds, was broken off, and forwarded to Brisbane, for assay. This is the assayer's report:—"We crushed 14lb. stone very finely, mixed well, and took for assay 1440gr., which contained 1.42gr. of pure gold, equal to 32oz. 4dwt. to the ton. Gold partly free and visible in the stone, partly contained in copper-bearing pyrites." Says an advertisement in the Hughenden "Ensign:— £5 Reward. THE a...

Military and Naval Notes. [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Figaro and Punch — 19 December 1885

Military and Naval Notes. Officers in command of Defence Force or Volun- teer Companies, and Privates of any corps, are in- vited to forward any memoranda of general interest relating to Defence or Volunteer doings, for inser- tion in this column. Personal Anecdotes and reminiscences will also be highly acceptable. The Military Sports held in the Exhibition grounds on Separation Day, proved to be scarcely the success that was anticipated. There were too many counter attractions. The Governor wasn't there, neither was the Premier, nor Colonel French, and the grounds looked, in fact were, discouragingly empty. Never- theless a long programme was carried out, including the following military competitions. MANUAL EXERCISE, in squads of 16 men (members of Permanent force and sergeants excluded, except as Instructors).—F Company, Ipswich, 1 ; Brisbane Engineers, 2. This was one of the most interesting competitions of the day, but the Ipswich men, owing chiefly to the indefatigable efforts...
