PRAHRAN FREE LIBRARY. [Newspaper Article] — The Australasian Sketcher with Pen and Pencil — 8 June 1878

PRAHRAN FREE LIBRARY. Thk Prahran Town-hall has just been enlarged by the addition of a building containing accommodation for the local branch ofu the post and telegrapli department and a free library. This.; buildimr has cost £6,0S7, of which the Government have given £5,000, the remainder being contributed by the Prahran 1 own Council, which also gave the site. It harmonises well -with -the Town-hall, the architects, Messrs. Crouch and Wilson, having kept in view the desirableness of making the addition in such a form as to give the whole pile an appearance of symmetry and compactness. About the new postal and telegraphic accom modation it is sufficient to state that it will be a great improve ment upon that hitherto existing there. The most interesting portion of the new building is a large room on the first floor intended for the Prahran Free Library. The library itself has; been in existence in another room in the town-hall arid^else where for 18 years, during the whole of whic...

SPORTING [Newspaper Article] — The Australasian Sketcher with Pen and Pencil — 8 June 1878

In racing matters the month has been peculiarly barren, and almost the only event worth recording is the meeting of the Melbourne Hunt Club on the Flemington course on the Queen's Birthday. The Handicap Hurdle Race was won by Larrikin, Welshman being second, and Artful Joe third. Only three horses started for the Hunters' Stakes, which was won by Gladiator, ridden by Mr. T. Watson. Jacko' Lantern won the Handicap Flat Race ; Lady Ellen was second. Twenty-two others started. Eight horses started for the Open Steeplechase, which was won by Prince Alfred ; Dwarroon was the only other horse placed. The racing concluded with 'the Queen's Birthday Stakes, for which the large field of 30 horses Btarted. The winner turned up most unexpectedly in Aspen, a two-year-old, who was but very little noticed in the betting. His Excellency the Governor, Lady Bowen, and family, were present. The 'grand stand and hill enclosure were well patronised. There was a very good attendance at the Kensington-pa...

OUR NAVAL DEFENCES. [Newspaper Article] — The Australasian Sketcher with Pen and Pencil — 8 June 1878

OUR NAVAL DEFENCES. While the military authorities have been pushing forward the ?work of constructing the new batteries at Queenscliff and Point Nepean, of which we gave a full description in our last issue, Captain Mandeville, the senior naval officer, has been putting the three vessels ?which constitute the Victorian navy into proper working order, so that they may be of some service in the event of an enemy's squadron attacking the port. As is well known, we have three war vessels in the: colony, viz., the Cerberus, the Victoria, and the Nelson, and some statement of their presen condition will no doubt be of interest. The turret ship Cerberus, with her four 18-ton guns (400 pounders), is now in a thoroughly efficient state. The engines, including those for working the turrets, the steering gear, and the capstan, are in perfect order. The turrets- revolve noiselessly and swiftly, making a complete revolution in 39 seconds. A small starboard after boiler was recently found to be ...

MAORIES COOKING AT A BOILING SPUING, NEAR LAKE TAT7PO. Our illustration shows a party of Maories cooking at a boiling spring, in a village near Lake Taupo, in the North Island, where, within a radius of 10 chains, are to be found springs or wells of water of any temperature, from tepid to boiling heat. The sketch shows one which is regularly used for cooking purposes ; the food to be cooked is attached to a long flax line, and lowered into the boiling cauldron. As the country becomes more settled and these natural wonders of Taupo more known, great numbers of travellers, and tourists visit the locality, finding plenty to repay themf for the toil and trouble of the journey. the month; Tjik events here depicted are noticed in another column. WIRE-WALKING EXTRAORDINARY. [Newspaper Article] — The Australasian Sketcher with Pen and Pencil — 6 July 1878

WIRE-WALKING EXTRAORDINARY. The Sydney Morning Herald of June 10 relates :— Since. Mr. L Estrange created a sensation by walking across an inlet of Middle Harbour on a high-rope some months ago, funambulists of various degrees of excellence have become so numerous here that rope- walking has, to a great extent, lost its attraction. Ihis, in all probability,, is in consequence of the operation having very little that is graceful about it. It is only when a rope walker intimates that he will execute his feats in such a way that , he runs great risk of losing his life that anything like a crowd will muster to see his performances. One of these thrilling enter tainments took place on Saturday last, in which there was the novelty of two persons risking their lives shrmltaneously. ? The occurrence had been contemplated by the public for several days past with considerable interest, as it was said to have arisen out of a wager of £200 a-side, between Mr. J. Perkins, representing this colon...
