THE BATTERIES. [Newspaper Article] — The Wyalong Star and Temora and Barmedman Advertiser — 15 January 1895

Tnii Hat i i:i: iiis. Gough's No. 2 has completed the crushing of 130 tons from Stanley's Blow, with, it is said, a probable yield of about 9d ,vts per ton. This, however is only approximate, as it is reported that the shareholders, not being satisfied with the result, have forwarded the amalgam, as well as the blanketings, to Sydney for treat ment. The result will probably give them a return of oyer |oz per ton, reef, we think with that they should be fairly satisfied. They undoubtedly anticipated a higher return, and are perhaps somewhat disappointed ; and in this ease it is not surprising (hat. rumours are about which are calcu lated to do this new battery serious injury, and they should be taken with salt. It is to the interest of battery owners to do full justice to every parcel of stone that passes through their hands,' and nnless owners can prove that gold has been actually lost, it. is but justice to give a new battery a fair show, and make allowance for trifliug hitches at ...

GROTESQUE. Few things more delightful in tbe way of grotesque antithesis have come to our knowledge than the let.tei read by Lady Laura Ridding in the conrse of a paper at the recent Church Con gress in England. A servant girl was on her way to Australia, and wrote to Lady Laura from on board ship. She said : — '? Dear Madam,— I hope this finds you as well as it leaves me. The ship is in the middle^of the Red Sea, and it is fearfully hot. ' I'm in', a teirible state of melting all day long. But., honored madam, I know that you will be pleased to hear that I am still a member of the Church of England .' One would like to know that girl.
