It appears that Mrs. OUkcs, who occupied a room with her daughter^was awak ened by a noise. Thinking it was her ?laughter, she called out: 'Is: that you, Edith!' A man then ruslied from the room. . Str. -Gilkes, .wlio was sleeping but on the verandah, sprang out of bed, whereupon the intruder doubled lia'ct: Mrs. and Miss Gilkes theu pluckily seiz ed the man, tvh'o threw them botli. ilr. Gilkes then took a hand and. after a desperate struggle,, lasting threequar tern of an hour, the man was cvehtAlly overpowered. ^Subsequently Edward Pcareo. was brought before tho Police Court and charged- with having^ entered tlie dwelling house with intent to com' mit a felony.
