To the PRINTER of the SYDNEY GAZETTE. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser — 9 November 1806

To the PRINTER of the SYDNEY GAZETTE.             As the season for cyder making approaches, I esteem the present a proper time for giving such hints upon the subject as I have from experience found to be just. We had last year   some very good cyder expressed in the colony; but still the complaint was universal, that its original good quality could not preserve it from passing to an acid, and afterwards into a put-            rid fermentation. How far the observances I     lay down may be practised I cannot pretend to say, nevertheless deem it not immodest to   believe, that those who adhere to them most       nearly will find the greatest success from     their endeavours—though all that I advise   are mere minutiæ, easily put in practice.   The fruit should in th...

SYDNEY. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser — 9 November 1806

SYDNEY             A Bench of Magistrates was convened on the 25th ultimo: before whom William Clarkson and Thomas Newshan were charged by Captain Richard Brooks with the embezzlement   of a roll of tobacco from on board the ship     Alexander; which charge being substantiated upon evidence they were ordered to hard labour at Castle Hill for the space of two years; in   consequence of which the latter addressed a Me- morial to HIS EXCELLENCY stating the absence of witnesses, and praying that the matter might undergo another investigation, which was com- plied with and brought before the Bench on Tuesday last. The first evidence in support of the charge was the carpenter of the ship who said at Newshan's request he had cut a roll of tobacco into two equal proportions supposing it to be the property of the prisoners jointly ; several seamen swore positively...

BUSH-RANGERS. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser — 16 November 1806

BUSH-RANGERS.   As the daring spirit of these desperate offenders occupies much serious attention at the present moment, we enter into the following particulars on the subject. It   has been some time since clearly ascer- tained that five of the delinquents   advertised had associated themselves, and infefted the grazing farms in the vicinity of Prospect, of which the flock of John M'Arthur Esq. appears to have been       the chief object of their ravages. Five, sheep have disappeared in the course of one night, notwithstanding every vigilant exertion of the stock keepers and guards, the number of whom were necessarily in- creased. Night and day they have been   harrassed by their daring visitors ; their huts plundered as well as their flocks, & their provisions carried off. Apprehen- sion and alarm were conftant, and their   effects in the following instance pecu- Iiarly doleful :–John Griffiths and Si- meon Donnallv being...

To the PRINTER of the SYDNEY GAZETTE. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser — 23 November 1806

To the PRINTER of the SYDNEY GAZETTE     "SIR,   " Seriously reflecting on the scarcity     now drawing to a period, I cannot avoid     in a great measure attributing its ex-     treme pressure on the public to the igno-     rance of the bakers in arithmetical cal-   culation, --- I have carefully watched the markets, and well acquainted with     each week's average price of wheat, as   well as of the customary charges de-   manded for a 2lb, loaf; which did not at any time bear a fair proportion only to the Assize established by Public Ordo- nance ; namely, " a loaf for 4d. in   money to weigh 2lbs. when one day old." SYDNEY. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser — 23 November 1806

SYDNEY.   On Friday evening HIS EXCELLEN-   CY left Town, on an excursion through     the various Out Settlements, to inspect the commencement of the harvest. We contemplate with much satisfac- tion the inclination to industry which   begins to manifest itself throughout the Colony.
