A VICTORIAN CLAIMANT TO VAST ESTATES. [Newspaper Article] — The Maffra Spectator — 18 October 1883

A VICTORIAN CLAIMANT TO           VAST ESTATES.         A singular narrative, founded in part upon an extract from the "Dundee Ad- vertiser," and relating to the persecu- tions and confiscations of two centuries   ago, has been published by Mr. John Whitelaw, of Drummond-street, Carlton.     Mr Whitelaw claims to be the lineal descendant of John Whitelaw, a gentle-   man of Lanarkshire, who was executed at the Market Cross of Edinburgh, on the 30th November 1683. From the records it appears that he was condem- ned to death for the following reasons -- "First he refused to say God save the King ; second he said he considered the whole three nations bound to adhere to the covenant they had recently made ; third he was present with the rebels at   the rising of Bothwell-bridge, and had a sword in his hand ;...

THE Maffra Spectator. THURSDAY MORNING, OCT. 18, 1883. [Newspaper Article] — The Maffra Spectator — 18 October 1883

THE - THURSDAY MO1NINO, OCT18, 1883.: TIe Annual Report of the jtailwly Department, ;whil it sl ows grand re ysnte in .the work of rail way construa tion; is somewhlat discournging in a conimercial point of view. In tlio old world and in America rail ays are built by companies, and are made to pa large dividends. of profit to the -ien subscribing the capital. In NewSouth Wales, also, the Governmient lines yioeld .} per cenit, on the outlay. But in Victoria our railways have bqen firom the first a costly undertaking for the community. No doubt this has in great part arison fromi the unresionable extra vagance whiolic dirooted thei laying down the Sandhurst and Ballarat lines. The Mount Alexander line cost L40,000 a iiilo, and somni of the others L10,000, while thei Governmgnt limit is now L4,000, .and . the Heyfileld line woill, we beli9vo, be at a lower cost. Thus it might havoebeen hoped that, with, the comparativo cheapness of later lines and the large inocrease of traffilo, a fai...
