STRAY NOTES. THE IRISH DELEGATES. [Newspaper Article] — Barrier Miner — 15 April 1889

STRAY NOTES. THE IRISE" DELEGATES. TO-NIGHT the local-branch' oí the Irish j National League will be called upon to discuss no less important a matter than the approaching visit to Broken Hill of the Irish delegates, whose campaign has been opened with such signal success in Adelaide. If the struggle which these three patriots-Messrs. Dillon anil Deasy and Sir Thomas Grattan Esmonde, Ms.P. -have come to Australia to speak about and aid were inseresting to Irishmen only, I should say, let the Irish National League alone carry out »ll arrangements in connection with the delegates' visit. But the justice of the Irish patriots' cause appeals to hearts which have no particular sympathy with the Irish simply because they are Irish. They know that a wrong, and a most monstrous wrong, fe being done three or four millions of people who have the right to call themselves Britons, and, worse than all, they know that that wrong is being done by other Britons. It ÎB the strong against the nreak ;...

Barrier Miner. MONDAY, APRIL 15, 1889. Fire Alarms. [Newspaper Article] — Barrier Miner — 15 April 1889

MONDAYAPRIL 15, 1889. Fire Alarms. A few months ago arrangements were made between Mr. Patton, the     manager of the Proprietary mine, and   the local fire brigade, for a code of     signals to be used in connection with the mine whistle fire alarm. By the means then agreed upon not only was an alarm given that a fire had broken out, but by variations in the blasts the incipient conflagration was located. This was one of the most important arrange- ments ever concluded by the fire brigade; but, notwithstanding this, the practice of employing the code mutually agreed upon was very soon allowed to fall into disuetude, one that now when, the mine whistle shrieks out the dreaded signal, one   may see the brigadiers looking to the right and to the left in the hope of discovering where the flames may have broken out into existence, and where   their services may be required. Con- sequently much tim...

Rains and Trains. [Newspaper Article] — Barrier Miner — 16 April 1889

Rains and Trains. THE trains arriving fr"m Adelaide this morning were not so mach delayed as it was anticipated they would be. The first, which should have reached Broken Hill 'Station at shortly after 2 o'clock, did not arrive until about 6 o'clock ; but the second did not suffer any delay. The passengers report that it was raining when they left Adelaide, and it only ceased at short intervals until they reached the border. Other . passengers from the northern districts of South Australia, as far north as Port Augusta, declare that it was raining. heavily there when they left. It" was feared that the line might be disturbed a little this side of Yunta, and so the engine left the carriages and proceeded on alone for som« distance, returning in about an hour. From here on to Mannahill very slow progress was made ; and even after leaving this latter place they went slowly over certain parts of the country. All the dams on the line are full to'overflowing.
