THE MAIL NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — Record — 24 November 1870

THE MAIL NEWS. THE Suez mail has again, with unerr ing. punctuality, put us in possession of the latest European news up to within some twenty-one days. As far as the continental war is concerned " All is lost now " as regards France, although with indomitable bravery-a sublimity of patriotic devotion,-she still fights for. her altars and firesides inch by inch, and with hope against hope still proposes to rid French soil of the in vaders. Without scanning too closely the merits of the dreadful struggle from its inception, we may say that it exhibits, on the part of the French, a fine specimen of Spartan patriotism in their stern resolve " of no surrender, and no cession ;" as to the capitula tion of Metz by the gallant BAZAINE, | to have prolonged the seige would but have been useless cruelty, and loss of life. One feature has struck us, and will probably excite similiar surprise in others, viz., the silence as to any ac tive operations on the part of the French fleet, and we fail ...

THE MECHANICS' INSTITUTE. [Newspaper Article] — Record — 24 November 1870

THE MECHANICS' INSTITUTE. THE' annual meeting of the subscribers to this valuable Institution takes place shortly, and we believe that some con siderable alterations in the rules will be thereat suggested, and, probably, adopted. The reformation we refer to is more especially the vesting of the appointment of office-bearers in' the hands of the subscribers at the general meeting-instead of the committee, which has hitherto been the practice. We do not believe for one moment that this action is intended as a reflection upon the gentlemen who have been selected from time to time by the var ous committees, but for other reasons it has been deemed expedient that the election for the more responsible offices of the Institute should be in the hands of the general body than left to the committee- a comparative few- be lieving that the proposed alteration has for its end and purpose the benefit of the Institution. We trust that it will be accepted in that light, and that it may cause no hea...
