SYDNEY. 13th August, 1875. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 18 August 1875

SYDNEY. (PROM ODR own OOBRKSPOJJDEHT.'l 13th AuKUSt, 1875. My last was wrltteri on the O'Connell centenary, and that celebration has supplied much food fur comment slnco. In almost all the cities and towns of Australia, there have been celebrations of the day. Sydney was dis tinguished from the rest by a procession through the streets, a bad distinction, according to tho Sydney Morning Herald and others. But the orderly demon stration in honor of the good. Irish Patriot, might have been taken as a proof that there was no danger or impro priety in Buch a course. The Herald said on the iol lowing morning 'A fresh apple of discord bos been thrown in our midst, which was by no means what our community wanted. Friday passed without disturbance. But was the danger over with Friday night? Will there not be other attempts to make as light of the law, or even to sail close to the law?' Surely the writer of these words might have seen that It was he himself who was throwing in ' tho apple of ...

MELBOURNE. August 14th, 1875. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 18 August 1875

MELBOURNE. (from ODR OWN COBnESrONDEST) August 14th, 1875. The Ministry baviofg been sworn In, have now to ap pear before their constituents, and bo re-elected before, they appear on tho Treasury bendhes. It does appear a very foolish thing that on the assumption of ofhea , any member should be compelled to appear again before Ills constituents for election, especially when lie is only ap pointed to do the needful work of tho oountry: A great deal of expense would bo saved to both member and country if this course were altered. The good arising from it la moro than counterbalanced .by tne evil of ex pense, for In veTy few cases is there any opposition to the minister's return, and time Is lost, and money thrown uselessly nway. 1 1 Is not likely that any person will come forward to oppose any of the ministers seeking re election, so that the only excitement arising from tho elections will be tho enunciation of the policy of the new ministry which will bo first intimated oh next Monda...

These constitutions were 'embodied in the Act, at the instiga tion of the late Air Robert Johnson, isupported by the conservative majority, who acted as if they, though't the church-would fall to pieces, if it were not supported in all the details of its organisation by the authority of a statute. Now it : is found a yoke too heavy to be borne, to be thus bouud hand and foot to an act of Parliament, and the majority has recorded its conviction that the act should bo so modified as to leave it open for the chur...
