The Warragul Guardian. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1881. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 10 November 1881

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1851. ALTHOUGo wholly opposed to any al teration of the principles of the pre sent Edueltion Act, which provides for a free, secular and compulsory education of every man's child in the colony of Victoria, we are not so dull as not to be able to observe that there are some clauses in the act which re quire considerable amendment. The proposed royal commission to enquire into the alleged grievances will un doubtedly be sanctioned by the Legis lative Assembly; and, in our opinion,' the gentlemen who are to constitute the commission will find' that after several months hard work their exer tions have been fruitless. Our reason for saying sodis that the commission will only treat with the claims which the Roman Catholics have always been so eager to secure, but for which they have given no further reason than that of conscientious scruples. But it is not our intention to enter into argu men t on this subject, and as the op portunity presents itself we may state th...

COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE. Guardian Office, Thursday. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 17 November 1881

COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE. Guardian Office, Thursday. Business in all branches during the week has been slack, and although there, axe plenty of sellers, buyers are not to be found. At Buln Buln, on Saturday last, a very large number of cattle were forward, includ ing 150 head fromthe Golburn, also a draft of horses from Stratford. There was a large attendance, many, however, coming more for the purpose of attending the.Agri cultural Society's annual meeting than for buying stock. Several lots submitted secured satisfactory prices, but generally speaking the tone of the sale was flat. In the produce market very little is doing locally, buta good supply is being forwarded to the metropolitan markets. It would unquestionably be a great boon to the 'resi. dents of the district if a market for the sale of produce was taken on in connection with the cattle sales at Buln Buln, as it does not pay small dealers .to send their stuff to Melbourne. Planting and sowing is being carried on briskly...

THE NEW LAND BILL. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 17 November 1881

THE NEW LAND BILL. Looking at the new Land Bill from the, point of view held 'by those who advocate the system. of permanent? leases as the fairest to the State, and the surest ani most pofitable to the individual, those who drafted the nmea sure expose themselves to the charge of the inconsistency. The framers of the new Bill assert that whatever merits the leasing system may have intrinsically, that it is now too late to endeavor to introduce it, and yet all the time they are introducing it in their new Bill.: The only differ ence is, that whereas the advocates of permanent leasing wish to see the system established for the benefit of the selectors, the authors of the pro. posed change in our legislation are endeavoring by the measure they have submitted to introduceit for the bene fit of the squatters. The Bill proposes to deal with the remaining Crown lands under three heads. First, the line outside the mallee which comprises the fragments of runs amongst which . the presesnt fr...
