€§t 3-fotrnjialii frROM OUt OWN CuBBESroiIDKST.T Our twelve months' acquaintance, A.D. 1856, tool: leave of us in a moat unseemly and amly way — cold winds and the heaviest of ruins — tr- tho great niudrance ot business, and tho grievous disuppoiiit'nent of holiday keeperB by flood nnJ field. Cremorne gardens wore abandoned to gloomy solitude — the snnds of Manly Beach untrodden by human footstep, the nuijestiu diapasons of old ocean Biilistened to — no fireworks or fancy fair in the Domain — every body and every thing the personation of dullness. How changed o;i 'the ful lowing day, as you can vouch for from personal observa tion. 1S57 dawned upon us with bright and promising aspect— an almost cloudless sky prevailed throughout the day, which was followed by a night quite as beautiful. THE PRESENT A CRISIS IN THE HISTORY OF EUROPE. [Newspaper Article] — Illawarra Mercury — 5 January 1857

THE PRESENT A CRISIS IN THE HISTORY OF EUROPE. It would seem that the era when nations shall no loiver need to defend themselves is as yet far off 111 tho opinions of European rulers. The late war awoke many of us from dreams of a millennium of free travelling and prosperous export trade, but there is now little inclina tion to ananuon tnose means ui ucieuua nnn.11 .?»..-?» creuted ut such a cost. A continental kingdom which, like our own, cannot ufford to forget the urt of wur, is engaged with equal diligoi.co. Among the greatest military works of the present age niu^t be reckoned tha reconstruction of the fortress of Alexandria. This strong hold has been remarkaLld in the history of Northern ltalv during many generations. It has uiu-rm.tely defended Auslrians' airuinat French, and French against Austrians. When Itab passed into the hands of tha First Consul, the genius of great engineers and a vast expenditure of ihoiibv were employed to make Alessandria, one of the strongest 'bul...

English Extracts. DISMISSAL OF A COUPLE OF ARISTOCRATIC BLACKGUARDS. [Newspaper Article] — Illawarra Mercury — 5 January 1857

(Bngfejj dMrnrk DISMISSAL OF A COUPLE OF ARISTOCRATIC BLACKGUARDS. A memorandum appeared in the Gazette of Friday evening, 17th October, announcing that. Cornets Lord Ernest Vane Tempest und William J. Birf, of the 4th Light Dragoons, are dismissed from her Majesty's army, in consequence of conduct unbecoming officers and gen tlemen, and subvetsive of good order uud discipline. It thus appears that his Uoyal Highness tlie Uommumterin Chief bus taken a more summary method than that of a Court- Martial to vindicate the dignity of his profession, which .had been outraged by the conduct of the'te officers at Brighton, who have now been degraded. Though wo have no official account of the facts upon which tho deci sion of the eomniander-in-Chief proceeded, uiill, if they in any degree resembled the account which has already appeared iu our column*, the seventy aud promptitude of the punishment ure amply justified. The unfortunate young man who seems tu have been the subject, of the prncti...

THE PAST YEAR. [Newspaper Article] — Illawarra Mercury — 5 January 1857

THE PAST YEAR. Armved at the beginning of another .year, it ie'no unfit tiling to take a cursory retrospect of the one now closed. We might, as we are approach ing the sixty-ninth, Anniversary of the Colony, extend our retrospect with profit to January 17S8, imt time and space uo not permit so large a theme. It is a grand thought, however, which we cannot forego, that sixty-ninth years ago there was not a civilised inhabitant upon this part of our hemis phere'^ that the land we occupy, and nil its . dependencies, were, to -industry, wealth, science, and human enjoyments, one vast desert, the abode only of savages and wild animals. Now, the several colonies together eontain some 700,000 colonists at least, witli -on almost incalculable amount of property, and an increasing progress in ?every branch of the arts of life. This period of ^ime lms been the most wonderful in the records of the history of mankind. Our grand fathers xcver dreamt of the existence of the land which we ?'? occu...
