SPIRIT OF THE PRESS. MADELEINE SMITH'S TRIAL. [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian, Ipswich and General Advertiser — 29 September 1857

SPIRIT OF THE PRESS. MAIMCliEIXE SMITH'S TRIAL. (From the Timtt, \Qth July.) If romance and mystery can ensure remembrance, ? the terrible vase wliich nns yesterday concluded at EMinnurgh. will have an abiding place in the annals of criminal justice. Madeleine Smith has, after nine days' trial, been acquitted, and goes forth again , free into the world.. On tbe first charge of attempt to poison she has been found 'Not Guilty,' while the second charge to the same effect and the actual murder have bean declared «' Not proven.' The death of Pierre Etuilc L'AngeUer is pronounced by the jury to be a mysterv. which the evidence brought before them wan unable to solve. Thus ends the oasui Uuman justice acknowledges itself baffled, aud ceases its attempts to unveil what perhaps is for ever deutiuod to be hidden. The ia.st fuw years have certainly been a period full of startling crimes. The old times of want and discontent in these islands were, no doubt, prolific of much murdering and riot,...

ELECTORAL SCHEME FOR MORETON BAY [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian, Ipswich and General Advertiser — 6 October 1857

ELECTORAL SCHEME FOB MORETON BAT (From the Empire, September 23.) Since the receipt of the despatch from the Secre tary of State on the subject of the separation of Moreton Bay. the member* for the Northern Dis tricts and other centlemen Dfcsnectivolv interested in the new colony, as might naturally be expected, have been consulting together on the preliminary details of the government to be inaugurated. We believe these consultations have been carried on partly in communication tvith the Ministers, though of course without any official sanction; and no doubt suggestions emanating from such a quarter would have weight in the Cabinet deliberations ou such a subject whoever might be the men in power. We do not ssy they would not be likely to have sn undue weight, for there is good reason to apprehend that any influence of the kind would not be more free from interested motives in Now South Wales than elsewhere. It might be: that the ministers to whose Jot it should fall to advise on f...
