RUMOURS OF THE WEEK. [Newspaper Article] — South Australian Register — 22 May 1841

RUMOURS OF THE WEEK. It is reported that Colonel Torrens, late Chairman of the Colonization Commissioner for South Australia, has resigned his seat at the new Board. Two companies of infantry have been ordered to South Australia from New South Wales. Her Majesty's permission bus been grantc.l to the South Australian Militia to wear the Royal facings (blue), without the gold lace. It is said that the cargo of the Dumfries, chartered by Mr S. B. Garratt, of the late firm of Garratt and Fisher, who has returned to the colony in that ship, is valued at sixteen thousand pounds. Mr Garratt states that he was offered at Singapore a clear profit of £3000 to reland the tea shipped. Mr Charles Boucher, the Moorgate-street Bank agent for Adelaide, has returned from Hobart Town in the Waterwitch.   An official enquiry is said to be ordered into the conduct of Mr R. Torrens, the Collector of Customs, in reference to certain complaints preferred against him by Mr W. H. Phillips. ADDR...

THE "VILLE DE BORDEAUX" [Newspaper Article] — South Australian Register — 22 May 1841

THE "VILLE DE BORDEAUX" Your most obedient Servant, JOHN NEWMAN. Rundle-street, 21st May, 1841. We understand, on good authority, that the expenses incurred by the Collector of Customs in the impolitie and illegal proceedings con- nected with the seizure of the French mer- chant vessel have been actually defrayed by him out of the proceeds of the public customs duties, without the sanction or war- rant of the Government! It is unnecessary now to indulge in harsh reflections on the conduct of Colonel Gawler, or the tolerance which has been shewn to the   antics of the custom-house functionaries, in reference to this vessel. What we desire to   call the attention of the present government to, is the exceedingly dangerous and unusual principle of allowing any receiver of public monies to dispose of these monies uncontrolled or at his own discretion. If, as we believe it will be shewn, that Mr Torrens, in seizing this vessel and destroying the property of the o...

THE UNPAID CLAIMS. [Newspaper Article] — South Australian Register — 29 May 1841

THE UNPAID CLAIMS. No official announcement has [?] yet been made in reference to the unsettled claims of the colonists against the Government most of which were incurred by Colonel Gawler during the last quarter of his administration. It is understood, however, that they are in progress through the departments, in the usual manner, fur approval for payment, and that an early intimation of the course to be adapted with regard to them will be given. This is ex trcuiely desirable, as great inconvenience has been been felt by the uncertainty at present existing on the subject. Iti the mean iluie, we aiw glad tv Bay, iliai in the best-informed quarters no doubt exists as to the speedy liquidation of Governor Gaw ler'a dishonored bills. We have before us a letter, dated 31st December, 1840, adJressed by Colonel Torrent to Osmond Gillei, Esq, from which we have the satisfaction to extract tho fallowing passage:— " The Chancellor of the Exchequer has pledged Her Majesty's Government to gua...

MONETARY STATE OF VAN DIEMEN'S LAND. [Newspaper Article] — South Australian Register — 29 May 1841

MONETARY STATE OF VAN DIEMEN'S LAND. The neighbouring colonies seem to be in an absolute monetary panic. Their papers are filled with the most gloomy articles on the depression that exists. We find the following modest proposal of tgenerml mmntMty in one of then. The |*essureof the times has been felt m South Australia, bat we arc not yet come to a scramble :— !Withrt«Hi.ne the bombastic writing* which luvc been |mMisbe4 to tbe contrary, the fact i« too apparent, that a gloom hangs over the destiny of Van Diemen's Land. The people are discon tented and unhappy. They feel they «re deprived <if their natural rights, and thus their energies are damped, and their spirits depressed. At home the colony lies unjustly under a ban, which pre vents emigration to our shores, and so long us the mother country refuses iik free institutions, it i« vaiu to anticipate the British pubic will dishchuve tlw calumnies of out enemies. BOTANICAL GARDENS. TO THE EDITORS OF THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN REGISTER. [Newspaper Article] — South Australian Register — 29 May 1841

BOTANICAL GARDENS. TO THE EDITORS OF THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN REGISTER. Gentlemen—I have read letters sometime back in the Register noticing the condition of the Botanical Gardens in North Adelaide, with the observations of which I did not then quite agree to, so much at least as complained of the neglect shown to so valuable an institution in the .voting stages of the colony. Since that time, I have made some enquiries into the causes which have led to the desertion of thusc gardens by the gentlemen wliu were the com miitoc, ami generally by the public; and I have also lately visited and inspected the gardens, and trouble yon with the results. Theic is not a more beautiful spot in the whole province than these gardens. Had they been tastefully laid out, and provided with shady plauts or trellises as in Madeira, they would have been most attractive as a pro incnnilo to the inhabitants, anil in the dusty months of summer, invaluable as a retreat at a few minutes' ride from the town.
