ELECTRICITY IN THE AIR ! Master Builders Punch "the Other Cheek." [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 24 August 1914

ELECTRICITY IN THE AIR ! Master Builders Punch 'the Other Cheek.' At one stage of the last monthly meeting of the Master Builders' Association, the air became quite electrical. The main generating influence was Mr. Wm. Stuart, who made a severe attack, chiefly on the Government, for what he characterised as its one-sided administration of the industrial laws. He also attacked the unions for their policy^ of 'pin pricking.' Mr. Stuart is a straight talker at all times, but on this occasion his remarks were exceptionally acrid ; which is not to say that they were inopportune or undeserved. Judging from the final applause they amply expressed the pent-up feelings of master builders in this hour of trial. ' Prior to Mr. Stuart rising, the Secretary 'had read a letter from the Australian Builders Laborers' Federation, advising that it was their intention that all members shcmld start and cease work daily at uniform times from February 1, 1915. The Secre tary had also detailed the result ...

A PATRIOTIC FUND. Master Builders to Raise £5000. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 24 August 1914

A PATRIOTIC FUND. Master Builders to Raise £5000. The members of the N.S.W. Master Builders' Associa tion did not sing the National Anthem at their last meet ing, nor did they indulge in any verbal display of jingoism. But they decided to inaugurate a patriotic fund and fixed £5000 as the objective. The proposal was warmly sup ported by Messrs. Mclntyre and G. P. Jones, jun., among other native-born Australians. Mr. Wm. Stuart said that the war was not a crisis in the life of the individual, but in the life of the nation itself. If a sum of £5000 would ensure their businesses against the common enemy, it would be the cheapest payment they ever made. The proposal was enthusiastically adopted and a sub scription list opened right away. The fund is to be controlled by a special committee.

THE HEART OF A SPECULATOR. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 24 August 1914

?' THE HEART OF A SPECULATOR. The usual 'spec.' is cottage work in suburbs where the builder is generally' a larid seller, but here, to show the confidence J. A. Smith, builder of Rosevillc, has in Sydney, he will give you some facts, relative to one of his speculations. He has just completed a large block known as J' the 'Ortono Buildings,'' on the new Wcntwgrth Avenue site, which was the notorious Wexford , Street before -the council resumed that district. Keen foresight has told J. A. Smith that Wentworth Avenue is to he one of the finest streets' in Sydney, and the connector of the ' Western with Eastern Suburbs from Oxford Street to the Railway Station. . If you were to stroll down that street to-day, you would find that it has made wonderful strides -S. in building alterations during the last twelve months. The building is built on the most modern principals, including electric lights 11irdughpuj,;.ji1,nTp^ti';.;;up-to-date sanitary arrangements and rubero.id roof, 'which roof...

"FAITH AND VIGOR." [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 24 August 1914

'FAITH AND VIGOR.' Under that heading the well-informed Melbourne corres pondent of the 'Sun' writes: — 'Great care is being exercised by the Prime Minister, members of the Cabinet, and officials and bankers concern ing the financial position. The Australian notes issue, which will be used to immense advantage, was never in a better position, gold reserve and investments being high and sound — far above past high-water marks. All is well. And it is difficult to see how things can go wrong, con sidering the complete confidence of all sets of financial men, including the Treasury officials. That this is fully justified will be seen when the statutory monthly notes | return, which will show changed, but very excellent and ! satisfactory, figures, is published at the close of this j month.'

A BUCK-UP MESSAGE— "KEEP GOING." THE POSITION AS IT REALLY IS. Australia NOT Directly Affected by War. SUPPLIES MUST NOT BE CORNERED. MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 24 August 1914

[?] From N.S.W. Minister for Works. THE POSITION AS IT REALLY IS. Australia NOT Directly Affected by War. SUPPLIES MUST NOT BE CORNERED. MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER. Speaking to a representative of this paper, the N.S.W. Minister for Public Works (Mr. Griffith) very strongly endorsed the sentiment expressed in these columns on the importance of pushing on building operations at the present crisis. 'Directly,' said the Minister, 'Australia will be entirely unaffected by the war; it is only the INDIRECT effect that we can feel, and this can be very materially minimised by a calm, determined and courageous tone and attitude on the part of our people. Certain industries based upon imported material will, of course, suffer, and, in some cases, have to entirely suspend operations, but of all our various industries the building trade is in a better position in this regard than any other. Timber, bricks, lime, cement and tiles should be entirely unaffected by the war. 'The principal danger to...

GERMAN AND BRITISH TRANSFORMERS. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 24 August 1914

? V GERMAN AND BRITISH TRANSFORMERS. The Sydney City Electrical Engineer submitted a report with reg'ard to the :s:i.OOO-volt transformers to be supplied by Messrs. Siemens Bros., under contract with the Coun cil. It stated that the firm assures the City Electrical Engineer most positively that the transformers, which were under construction at the firm's German works, can be equally well made in the English works, and their representative has cabled to his London house, asking by what date delivery can be given by the English works of the transformers. Under these circumstances, the City Electrical Engineer does not propose in the mean time to recommend the Council to cancel this contract. ? A ?

MOREE COUNCIL'S SAVING. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 24 August 1914

MOREE COUNCIL'S SAVING. Moree Council (N.S.W.) is still 'saving' the cost o.f an Engineer. At the last council meeting the Clerk of Works reported :— ?, I intended submitting a statement showing the ''''different 'public wbrks'that 'had been 'carried out, and the different costs, but pressure of other business did not allow me the time. I will, how ever, have it complete for next meeting. Further down in the press report we noticed : — Alderman Dobbie moved that Mr. A. Fairhall be appointed temporary working foreman, and in doing so said that the Council were not in a position to pay a man £4 per week. By the ?appointment of Mr. Fairhall a considerable saving would be effected. ? Alderman Suttie, in seconding, said that there had been no proper supervision over the men for some time. We wanted someone to stir them up. —Motion carried. ' Moree is 'saving' money without an engineer -all right; that is, in the great collective' mind of its aldermen. ?? -V ??')??:'???]'? ? ??'?;''? ?
