The Wagga Show. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 31 July 1896

IJIThe Wagga Show. There's going to be a big time at the Wagga show on the 2nd of next month. LeVs hope they'll have good weather. The prizes offered are tempting. In round figures the schedule may be summarised as offer ing £250 for horses, studs and hacks, £75 for cattle of all sorts, chiefly shorthorns, £250 for sheep, £50 for sheep-test prize, this year to be scoured under the supervision of the Technical College, £60 for poultry and dogp, £75 for farm, garden and dairy produce, and about £100 for domestic industries and arb. In both cattle and sheep — and also in horses — special sections are arranged for farmers' competitions. The milling prize this year is to be £15. a liberal sum for a bag of milling wheat. There was to have been a prize for the best local baby under 12 months, but perhaps that has not been offered. We hope to have a representative there, for it's a howling good show.

A Special Fleece. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 31 July 1896

A Special Fleece. Particulars of shearing of a ram from the Coonong flock bought at the late Sydney ram sales by Mr. J. S. Horsfal, for Widgiewa, at a cost of 500 guineas : — ' Eureka,' lambed April, 1895, shorn October 30th, 1895, shorn agaiD, July 14th, 1896, yielding a fleece weighing 251bs for a growth of only 8^ months. This weight of wool from such a young sheep has probably not been surpassed, if, indeed, equalled by any merino sheep of the same age in Australia. The ram, when shorn, was not quite 15 months old and he was very closely shorn at the previous shearing. The wool is of beautiful quality and of the very best type of merino, and the sheep is well grown. 'What's that chart?' ' Ob, that's our family tree.' 'I might have known ib if I'd only stopped to think. My dog has one a gcod deal like it.'

Country Agents' License AN IMPORTANT MOVEMENT. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 31 July 1896

Country Agents' License AN IMPORTANT MOVEMENT. It will have been noticed that the old agitation for an association of country agents has been reviving of late. Mr. Alfred Bacon, of Gunnedah, worked at this for a long time and reached the point of calling a meeting and printing the rules for the pro posed association. But it all seemed to come to - nought. However, the bad times and the difficulties of trade have brought the subject once more to the front and this time there is a new method proposed. It is evident that an association is impossible at !' present, owing to the number of al leged agents who would refuse to join it. As a matter of simple fact, a stock agent requires as much careful train ing, and as wide a knowledge of the laws relating to stock, as a lawyer re quires for his business, or a doctor for his. There are legitimate agents in the country, who have by a lifetime's honest labor built up a good business, but the law affords them no protection whatever. Any misera...

Death of Mrs. Richards THE PASSING OF A GOOD WOMAN. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 31 July 1896

Death of Mrs. Richards] THE PASSING OF A GOOD WOMAN. Our readers will learn with deep regret to the death of Mrs. Richards, wife of Mr. Benj. Richards, of River stone Meat Works. The death oc curred, not altogether unexpectedly, yesterday, at her home, ' Kamilaroi,' Richmond. Mrs. Richards was one of the old school, a genole, motherly, - noble woman, loved and respected by | all who knew her. She was a Hawkes- 1 bury native, and was a great favourite in the district as Miss ' Williams, though only the old natives remember \ that time. Her husband, 'jBen ' Richards as he is familiarly called, is one of the pro prietors of the Riverstone Meat Works, one of the pioneers of our trade, and he will have the sympathy of thousands in his bereavement. The funeral takes place to-day at Richmond

Penny Postage and the "Stock and Station Journal." [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 31 July 1896

Penny Postage and the ' Stock and Station Journal.' There was a deputation of in fluential people waited on the Post master-General yesterday to ask for a system of penny postage in New South Wales. The organiser of the deputa tion was the editor of Lassetter's paper, the ' If leld.' The editor of that paper wants this paper, and all 'sich,' to pay postage, because Lassetter's has to do ifc owing to its bulk. The editor of this paper had the audacity to get up and make re marks to the Postmaster in opposition to the ironmonger's paper, and we hope to make some remarks on the subject in our next issue. We're just going to press now.
