The Natal Rebellion. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 14 April 1906

The Natal Rebellion. Latterly anxious eyes have been '?? turned to Zululand, where the uu rest existing among the natives for years has broken out in open re volt. The immediate cause of the rebellion is the recent imposition of the poll tax, or rather an in crease of native taxation. Evory one is familiar with the incident which first forced upon the au thorities the fact that tho situation was a serious one. Inspector Hunt, who in the execution of his duty as a tax collector, lost his temper and Btruck a. native chief, whereupon he -was immediately murdered. Subsequently the men of the .tribe responsible for the massacre were delivered up to jus tice and shot at Richmond. It is said that the present rising has no connection with, the Inspector Hunt incident, but' the whole busi ness goes to show that the natives are seething with discontent throughout Natal. The older men of the tribes say that it is not their fault, but that the whole difficulty lay in their inability to persuade...

FROM THE BULLETIN. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 18 April 1906

FROM THE BULLETIN. Melbourne owns a ringer of the ?changes who has been convicted about 30 times for persuading tradespeople that half-a-sovereign is worth 19s 6d. Ho walked into a pub t'other day, shouted for the landlord — who was an ex-sergeant of police — and throw down halfa sov. The landlord counted out 9s 6d change and the 'ringer' asked why and explained that he had meant to put down a sixpence. The landlord produced the halfsov ereign, and the 'ringer' produced a sixpence. There on the counter was ws in gold and lUs in silver — half of which belonged to tho publican. Tho 'ringer' then sug gested . that the publican should take the lot and give him a sovereign instead, and the publican, aa all the other 20 publicans had done, handed over the sovereign. The curious part of the business is that the police have not yet been able to convince the publican that he wasn't taken down for the whole sovereign. Curiously enough, one of the Vic. Supreme Court Judges upset a conviction a...

AUSTRALIAN BUSHRANGING. THE EARLY DAYS. CHAPTER VIII.—Continued. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 18 April 1906

Australian bushraimgbng. THE EARLY JJA-5TS. By CHARLES WHITE. CnAPTER VIII. — Continued. This trick was only just' success ful: when the division was taken, it was found that the members were equal, there being twenty-six for and twenty-six against. For a time there was a scene of tho wild est excitement, the climax of which was reached when the Speaker gave liis casting vote with the Govern ment, and thus defeated the motion. But the agitation was still , kept up outside tho House. Public meetings were held in every im portant centre, at which condemna tion resolutions were passed, and petitions against tho release was signed; and every prominent man in those centres either mado a speech or in some way gave evi dence of his opposition to the action of the Governor and his advisors. Petitions to tho House and to the Governor were prepared and carried at those meetings without dissent, and no movement since that for the cessation of transportation to the colony had taken such a firm ...

Reid Cornered. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 18 April 1906

Reid Cornered. Mit. Reid is in the tightest corner of his political life and he doesn't know what to do in order to get a following for the coming elections. His good old stand-by freetrade, is practically dead and G. H. Reid, is too old a campaigner to try and make that cat jump in its present discredited state. Ever since the accomplishment of Federation and the widening of the electoral boun daries to the shores of Australia, Reid has not been able to play the foreign-trade card with any degree of success. In fact, Reid's political light began to dim from the very moment that his influence was not limited to the borders of New South Wales. This is no fault of Reid's, but the circumstance is solely due to the fact that with the consum mation of federation he had to meet a preponderance of Protec tionist voting strength, and there was nothing for it but to abandon the cause which had stood him in good stead for about a.quarter of a mnknrj'. For a time . an.aUiunce with Mr. McLean l...

As You Like It. 'I miu.1 Imve liberty Withal u Inreu u dinner us thu wind. To blow on whom I plunse.' ' —?'As you lilku It.' (Act II, so. 7.) The determination of the Registrar of the Arbitration Court to recommend that the registration of the Sydney Wharf Laborers Union bo cancelled unless its claim to close its books against any further en rolment of bona .fide applicants be abandoned, seems tothe Budget or nny open mind to be a reasonable and just one. Why should any union be allowed to close its books while a singlo'oble-bodied and otherwise competent man seeks admission and is willing to pay the necessary fees and conform to the rules of the Union? The Wharf Laborers' Union is allowed to have a mono poly of certain work provided it admits to membership as many as will pay up and . are physically competent to work. But the Union wants, to close down and keep its roll limited so that its members can with a certainty monopolise every job, while those whom it has forcibly kept outs...
