The Chilian Battleships. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Tweed Advertiser — 29 May 1903

TJic Chilian BSattlcsIiigis. 1 Tirn: Chilian battleships are still on the market, and by all appearances will be for some time, though there is just a possibility of Russini: buying them. The Russian Government, how ever, has not adopted the 7'oin gun, and if they were acquired for tlie Hus-; sian service this calibre would need to be replaced, which would mean con siderable alterations in the design, .aiuh consequently loss of time and increase iu the cosh It has already been said that there are sound arguments in favour of purchasing these vessels for the Royal Navy. Though it is true that, they lire not identical in type with any of our existing ships, there would be 110 .difficulty with regard to their guns, which are of patterns already in our service. . It is, too, desirable to test in actuiil service these vessels against those1 designed by Ihe construc tion department, of the Adtiiirnlty, so as to discover whether for the past ten years we have really been sacrificing the su...

Single Judging. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Tweed Advertiser — 29 May 1903

Single Judging. A Low;1 nnd interesting discussion took placei recently at the Bega agri cultural association meeting 011 the question of singl-5 judging nt agricul tural shows. Mr. John Stewart moved that single judging he not adopted in the cattle sections at the next show. He pointed out the difficult position a judge was placed in at. the last show, especially in the Ayrshire section, where he had great difficulty in arriving at a decision. He considered that two 01* three judges gave more satisfaction. Mr. H. D. Morton, pre sident, supported the system of single judging because he believed by it. t hey obtained a careful and honest opinion. If a man were not competent he would uot undertake to judge alone, for if he made a mistake he could not place the blame 011 the shoulders, of, his co judges. Two incompetent judges' who' | .were strongminded might give a de cision where three judges officiated against, the opinion of one competent judge. He believed the single judge system ...
