An examination shower, that some general cargo con signed to Thursday Island and Port Moresby was ahhze, while the Insula tion? of the hold had lin-d and were giving off fumes. Tin: fight agninst the fire was most difficult, and one < fficcr was dragged from below only just in lime to save his life. After about two hours' Fight - ingtlie fire was extinguished. At liatavia the hold was emptied, and it was then found that the fire h.-.d apparently been caused by the spon taneous combustion of a bale of oakum. About 90 tons of cargo have been more or less damaged, while the hold will probably inquire reinsu lating.
