CITY CHATTER. THE DEEPENING VOTES. [Newspaper Article] — Port Pirie Recorder and North Western Mail — 3 December 1898

? CITY QHKTTER. By Twitter. THK DEWESISti VOTES, Messrs. Catfc mid Roberts had a genuine soire onThuraslay. Tbo Port Adelaide deepening vote had been struck oat by a majority of seven, every vote but one recorded, and the destroying angel had resolved to reduce the Pirie vote by one half. When the Hou30 met the numbers were against Mr. Roberts, who became energy and skill personified to recover the situation. Mr. Catt was, unfortu nately for him, iu the chair, and could not ei* her advocate or vote on the question. Yet he and Mr. Roberts were in constant communication. Bin Foster moved the amendment. It was an attack by Port Augu3ta on Port Pirie, a battle of the ports, not even a case for economy pure and simple, but !ie did not then say 30. In fact he did not speak till Mr. Pi ice had stirred up his pity and his bile. By that time the victory had been won by the amateur Vhips. Arguments in the House had fliyed but a small part. Mr. Holder had put the case strongly, and Mr. Roberts...

The Port Pirie Recorder. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1898. The Drink Traffic. [Newspaper Article] — Port Pirie Recorder and North Western Mail — 3 December 1898

<3Elie |tort fHcie flccmrbet. Saturday, Decejiber 3, 1898. Thi Sriak Traffic. In a letter appearing in another column, Mr. W, J. McLeod criticises some remarks* contained in a sab leader in onr last issue on the driuk question. Our correspondent rightly says we disapprove of the methods employed by the teetotal party. We disapprove of and condemn them because the small but aggressive section of the community of which the party is composed wishes to thrust its views down other people's throats, and prevent them from enjoying one of the blessings designed by a beneficent Creator for use in a reasonable, rational way. Temper ance _\ve believe in. "We are as umcli concerned about the evils of drunken ness and as anxious to do away with them as Mr. MeLeod and those who thiuk with him. A Defence of Trades Unions. BY A LARGE LABOR EMPLOYER. [Newspaper Article] — Port Pirie Recorder and North Western Mail — 3 December 1898

A Sefeaco of fedes/^aiofis^ ? BY A LARGE LABOR EMPLOYER. It is riot uften; (remarks an English correspondent) that a large employer of labor defends trades unions, but Sir B. C. JJiOivue, in his presidential address to the North-East " Coast Institution of Engineers and Ship Builders, hi Ne'.veastle, denied that the employers in the large engineer* strike had any wish to smash the unions, for he thought that employ ers were far safer .in dealing with wise arid experienced-muoa leaders than with individual workmen. .He deprecated- the "new unionism" which advocated extreme demands,, and laid down the doctrine that em ployers and workmen vyere natural, enemicK. He believed that socli wicked nonsense had never taken any deep hold of the bulk of the working classes. He advocated the 'restriction of systematic overtime, as he believed that to keep men working evening after evening i ill they were worn ont was demoralising, unhealthy, and wasteful, und added largely to the risk oF acciden...

Propagation by Layering. [Newspaper Article] — Port Pirie Recorder and North Western Mail — 3 December 1898

Propagation byLayesing. Professor J, L. Budd, of the Iowa Experiment Station, gives (.be follow ing instructions on the subject/ of layering plants This is ■' one of Nature's methods of propagation with a wide range of application. Some, species are slow in starting roots from the buried shoots, but all varieties and species we have tried root within two years, .and very many when'; we bury young and excitable shoots in August root in sixty days. In Ger many, even the school children are taught to hy down shoots of the fruit trees, roses, and other>; shrubs and trees, and report; on the varied time required for rooting. In spring layering of fruit trees,' grapes, and shrubs, it is best to lay the shoot flat in a trench four inches deep, and peg it down tightly on the bottom. It lies exposed to the sun until shoots starts upright from each bud, and reach -a height of three inches,' when the- trench is gradually; filled as growth progresses. The first roots do not come from; the ol...
