BUILDING TRADE FACTS 127pp. 7in. x 5in. cloth. Crosby, Lockwood & Son, London (English Price, 2/6 net). [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 3 December 1930

BUILDING TRADE FACTS By W. T. Sydney Smith 127pp. 7in. x 5in. cloth. Crosby, Lockwood & Son, London (Eng s lish Price, 2/6 net). The volume, is described as containing one thousand queries and answers relating to all sections of the building trade, including gen eral information; the reader can take our word ? for it that the query and answer -manner of imparting information is most effective- while all the questions are splendid— in fact, although only a small volume it took much longer to revie'w than some much larger brethren, as it was so interesting that every single word was read and digested. The book is divided into chapters like a ' specification, each dealing with a different trade. The first section dealing with 'General'./ im- parts a lot of interesting information about mortgages and factors liable to affect a pros pective builder; many little points that' should be known but perhaps have been forgotten, such as the meaning of E. and O.E.; difference between, an...

UNIONISTS AND UNION RULES Facts Beneath the Surface [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 3 December 1930

UNIONISTS AND UNION RULES Facts Beneath the Surface Business 'took the writer to a country town .on the railway route, and curiosity induced a visit at five minutes past three on a Friday afternoon to a building in course of erection. Although the day was fine and materials were available, and the contract time limit not very far away, there was not a soul on the job, with the exception of one man. When- sur- prise was expressed at the deserted qondition of the place, he explained that the men by t\'r\rL*iMrr nofKr a n rl tofA rvn tlin V* ^''6 IttW Wl* WWW 1'' 1 * A W H wJ 11 » ^ days had put in their 40 hour quota, beyond which work was fqrbidden; in fact he added there is a chance of trouble even now, for beginning before, and working after, the hours fixed by the Union. He further stated that although there were over 1000 members in his Union lie had not attended a meeting for 18 years, and the average attendance was less than 20. Young 'hot heads,' and out of hun dreds of resolu...

FISSURES IN CONCRETE [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 3 December 1930

FISSURES IN CONCRETE Professor Abrams, an American authority on matters relating to concrete, recently com municated to the American Concrete Associa ation some curious information, supported by the testimony of practical experience, relative to the self healing of fissures in Jconcrete which in certain cases had closed up without any outside intervention. The'- .phenomenon' was first observed by the Professor in his laboratory,- where a certain number of test cylinders of concrete had, some eight years previously at the age of twenty-eight days, been tested to rupture. After having lain for several years in t corner of the yard of the laboratory these cylinders were brought in and submittted anew to tests of resistance to the point of rupture. It was then observed that not oiriy were they found capable of supporting without in jury the pressure formerly applied to them at the age of twenty-eight days but that their resistance to rupture had been increased from 13 to 2$ times the or...

NATIONAL INFLUENCE OF THE GOLD MINING INDUSTRY How Urban Population and Gold React [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 3 December 1930

NATIONAL INFLUENCE OF THE GOLD M'INING INDUSTRY How Urban Population and Gold React Some people are disposed to be despondent because of the financial (restrictions of the present so called 'depression'; but those who have a longer experience or have madie a deeper study of the subject, regard ' the matter as a more or less natural reaction. Historical figures often set .our minds on new lines. Our primary and'ustjries consist not onl3r - of w.hcat, wool, and wine, or coal; copper and cheese; but in what seems -even more effective in making the world a desirable place to live in — -Gold. „ ? Some products, like wheat and wool, vary so 111 selling price and demand, that at times the producer cannot pay expenses, whilst at other times he does well. But gold is always in greedy demand all over the world, and varies very little in price. Half the population of this State approxi mately lives in Sydney, and although' a large proportion of our principal towns like Bathurst, Orange, Forbes...

Weekly News-Letter FROM AN APPPRENTICE TO HIS MOTHER Light Discussions on Topics of the Week [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 3 December 1930

Weekly News-Letter FROM AN APPPRENT ICE TO HIS MOTHER Light Discussions on Topics of the Week Dear Mum, Things arc looking- up a bit, I fancy, though i my dentist says his business is looking down ' in the mouth. ?I notice that Keep -Macplierson's, in an ad vertisement in ''Building' say 'that they equip ped twenty-two large .buildings with' hardware and sanitaryware during the last two months. . I think I'd like to shop from a firm like that which shows tangible reasons for optimism. Twenty-two large buiklings sounds prosper ous to my ears, and I'suooose a . lot of nfhm merchants did some large buildings too. Then quite a number of; buildings have .gone up to the full height limit of 150 feet, so I am as ' su'ming your reference is to 'high times' rather than to 'hard times.' - , No, times are not bad for everybody for some people seem to have saving graces In , the. Commonwealth Banks, deposits have ? reached ^48,566,894; an increase of £296-408 for the month. The new accounts ope...
