THE METROPOLITAN AGRICULTURAL EXHIBITION. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 8 May 1869

THE METROPOLITAN AGRICULTURAL .EXHIBITION. TnE Agricultural Exhibition in Sydney was opened on Tuesday afternoon by his Excellency the Governor. Heavy rain all day prevented many visitors attending, but the exhibition is a great success. The judges, notwithstand ing the unpropitious state of tho weather, stuck to their work with exemplary fortitude, and finished the main part of their work in the afternoon. The ' S. M. Herald gives a lengthened analysis of the show which will bo found interesting to many readers. It would bo impossible to attempt to give an abstract of it in the spaco at our disposal ; but wo may mention that among horses the first prize for a blood stalliori, 3 years old or over, was won from 11 exhibits by E. K. Cox's Yattendon, the second by Tarragon ; for 2 year olds first prize by Sir W. Maearthur's Sprite, and for yearlings by a Yattendon yearling owned by T. Rutledgo. For blood marcs the first prize was given to E. K. Cox's Days of Old, for 2 year old blood f...

TUMUT. (from our correspondent.) May 6th. — On Tuesday lost the fine weather broke up, and tho rain which ljad .been threatening descended throughout tho day, at times in pretty smart showers. As a proof of the mildness of tho seoson'I may mention that in many of the gardens and orchaid3 around Tumut fruit trees, including tho apple and pear, are in blossom, while some of tho earlier feared this untimely exhibition will deteriorate the fruit bearing capabilities of the trees for next season, but should the coming winter be a mild one perhaps wo may havo to record the wonder of two 'fruit seasons in oileyear. Some large flocks of , sheep, many of them in excellent condition, tho property of tho Messrs. Waller of .Cuba, are now passing through town ou their homeward journey. Mr. James Ashworth, lato of Adelong, is abont to open a new butchery on rather an extensive scale in Tumut. POLICE COURTS. GUNDAGAI. Thursday, May 6th.—Before the Police Magistrate. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 8 May 1869

POLICE COURTS. GUNDAGAI. Thursday, May 6th. — Before the Police Magistrate. John Fitzgerald, for being drunk and street, was fined lOs, of four days im'prisonr ment. John O'Riley was charged with having on the 28th ult. assaulted Ah Sam, Chinese cook at Kimo-saw Mills ; and there was a cross-charge against Ah Sam for spitting in Eleanor O'Riley's face. Mr. Creagh appeared for the O'Riley's and Mr. Perkins for Ah Sam. The circumstances of tho cose were that Mrs. O'Riley went to the Kimo Saw-mills to get some salt, but as Mr. E. Body was not at home did not procure it. As she was leaving the kitchen Ah Sam, who had she asserted insulted her and called her names on previous occasions, came before her and spat in her face. She went home and told her husband, who being naturally indignant went up to the kitchen, shook Ah Sam, and it was stated knocked him down, and threatened to give him a sound thrashing if he ever was again guilty of such conduct. SATRDAY, MAY 8, 1869. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 8 May 1869

:SATURDAY, MAY -8, 1869. The disastrous intolligenco received from New Zealand of tho attack upon the settlement of Mohaka by the ferocious Hawhaws, led by Tb Kooti, and of the massacre of the Europeans and friendly natives who capitulated under a promise that they should be uninjured, will be mi A wiHi rlfien reeret and indignation by all, and will arouse; anew tho dissatisfaction of those who, disapprove of the Imperial troops having been .withdrawn from the island. It is'not surprising that the recently inaugurated colonial' policy 'of the British Government should bodistasteful to many ; but it must bo remembered that colonists and the English public regard this question from very different aspects. It may appear to colonists that the - 'great&ess of the Brjtish empire, depends upon r.tho tranquility and prosperity of it3 depen dencies—especially of the one in which they re side—and that the Imperial Government should 'make all sacrifices for this object ; but this is by...
