Meet me at the LRC [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 8 October 1999

Meet me at the LRC by Erin McCarty stall writer All students could use a little bit ol help now and then. Whether it's tutoring in an especially difficult subject, reading and offering suggestions for a paper or providing information about Behrend's Study Abroad programs, the staff of the Learning Resource Center (LRC) is eager to assist students in any way they can. And the cost? Absolutely nothing. Although the Learning Resource Center, located on the uppermost floor of the Behrend library in the Academic building, is not new to Behrend, some of its programs are. Just last year advising for study abroad was made available through the LRC; prior to that it had to be done through the Provost's office. An extra emphasis has been placed on international studies of late. "It is becoming more and more beneficial for students to study abroad," said Ruth Pfleuger. Coordinator of the Learning Rescource Center. "Businesses look very highly upon international experience when intervie...

The lecture hall was filled to capacity and had several people sitting in the vestibule of the building, watching the presentation from a television screen. Dr. Kastings spoke about the many attempts to find life on planets out side of our solar system. Thus far, 18 planets have been discovered; yet, none of them remotely compare to Earth. Questions have constantly arisen as to whether or not there are chances of finding planets similar to Earth. Included in the presentation were several slides, one of which gave information on the size of the 18...

Franken [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 8 October 1999

Franken continued from front page —— This provoked Franken to lapse into the character that he was most famous for on Saturday Night Live, the 12 step un-licensed therapist Stuart Smalley. The audience roared with laughter as the student and Franken performed their take on this extremely popular character, which ended with Franken hugging the student, just as his character did on the show. After the lecture, Franken was available for a book signing in the Erie Hall lobby The bookstore had a stand set up for people to purchase Franken's books on the spot and have them signed. Franken's appearance at Behrend got the Speaker Series off to a good stall. His lecture was very well received by the Behrend audience, as could be gauged by the amount of laughter and applause emanating from Fric Hall. PHOTO BY JEKF MILLER Kris Motta, Assistant Director ot Student Activities, has Al Franken sign one of his books.

^ /S®m&^^ ^ At the past meeting of Commuter Council, the idea of selling stressballs for a fund-raiser was brought up to the membership. The request for money was submitted last week for the Wish-a-Thon. The Commuter Mixer will be held on October 16th from 3 until 6 p.m. in the Wilson Picnic Grove. The rain site will be the Reed Commons. Volunteers ate needed for publicity and shopping. Also, volunteers are badly needed to man the Commuter Council pumpkin painting table at Cider Rock from 4 until 7 p.m. on October 15th. Again, help with signs and shopping would be greatly appreciated. Commuter Council will be sponsoring a joint event with the Lion Entertainment Board for an audience appreciation night with free pizza and beverages. The meeting with Dr. John Lilley, Mr. John Ream, and Mr. Bill Donahue was very productive. Cross walks will be labeled below Erie Hall and on Jordan Road. Stipends? We don't need no stinkin' stipends! [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 8 October 1999

Stipends? We don't need no stinkin' stipends! A view from the lighthouse The President of Student (iovernenit Association now gets o\cr S3.3110 in stipends per year. That was decided in last weeks SGA meeting. Now the question thai still remains is "I )ocs the Pre side i n of S(i/\ 1 ally need fiat much money .'" What work docs the President do that makes the pusiion so demaning that she/he would need all that money'.' Last \cai. the SCiA president received NO stipends to do the same work as this ; ear. That seems a little greedy. So what if the money was a\ailable lor the officers to receive stipends. Why did all oi ii have to go the people holding offices m SCiA'.1 Coukin'I al least some of that money h.n c been redirected lorsit/c/cnt use' The SCiA is supposed to be an organi/ation that serves the students and pro\ ide a central voice for all of us. Rush to Rocky Road Babies with babies [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 8 October 1999

Rush to Rocky Road Babies with babies What is up with today's society? It seems like every time I turn around I see another child "with child." I realize all of us are technically adults here, but most of us are still very young. I am not one to be so judgmental about an issue like this, but come on, give me a break! Do young people realize how much pressure it can be to take on the responsibilities of a child? I mean, think about it, life for most of us has just started. How can a nineteen-year-old be sure of what they want to be doing everyday for the next eighteen years of their life? Most of the nineteen-year-olds I know can't even pick a major. Many disadvantages come from becoming pregnant at a young age. Young mothers are more likely to drop out of high school or college. With her education cut short, the mother may lack job skills, making it hard for her to find and keep a job. More likely she will be dependent upon her family or welfare. About 83'7e of teens that gi...

The Voice of Reason Use it or lose it! [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 8 October 1999

The Voice of Reason Use it or lose it! Well, it s that tunc ot year again. Politicians have started actively campaigning for elections that won't be occurring for over a year. As if I wasn't sick of listening to these people as it is, now I get to listen to them constantly for the next year. But that's besides the point. I was reading in a political science journal (yes, people really do read political science journals, but only if they are majoring in political science) that college .students, age 18-24, have one of the lowest voter turn outs. Why don't college students vote? It doesn't really make sense. The politicians that are elected will be passing laws that will affect us for the rest of our lives (and most of us have a long life ahead of us, even though my life expectancy seems to have diminished lately). So why don't we go out and vote, and make sure that the people who get elected will do things that are good for us? Talking with people around campus, everyone thinks...
