The Baby . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 8 May 1886

The Baby . For his own dear sake Baby ought to mind . She sets fair stones and firm who begins with the earliest gleams of intelligence to teach her child self-con-trol . When she has impressed into his mind the cardinal truth that she must be obeyed implicitly , however lustily will and temper pull the other way . she casts about the neck of passion a silken thread that will be a strong rein in the hand of the man . . Mother and conscience are and should be interchangeable terms until he passes the confines of infancy . Wholesale discipline bears earlier fruit than the lasting good done to boy and man . Baby is healthier , happier , infinitely less troublesome for comprehending that No and Do are non-elastic words on mamma s lips . The sooner the lesson is acquired the better for all parties . There is no fixed period in which to begin the good work . By the time the infant knows his mother , responds to her smile , and is lulled by her voice it is possible for her to establish a h...

Birds . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 8 May 1886

Birds . We will take the bird first . It is a little more than a drift of the air brought into form by plumes ; the air is in all its quills , it breathes through its whole frame and flesh , and glows with air in its flying , like blown flame ; it rests upon the air , subdues it , surpasses it , outraces it;—is the air conscious of itself , conquering itself , ruling itself . Also , into the throat of the bird is given the voice of the air . All that in the wind itself is weak , wild , useless in sweetness , is knit together in its song . As we may imagine the wild form of the cloud closed into the perfect form of the birds wings , so the wild voice of the cloud into its ordered and commanded voice ; unwearied , rippling through the clear heaven in its gladness , interpreting all intense passion through the soft spring nights , bursting into acclaim and rapture choir at day-break , or lisping and twittering among the bows and hedges through heat of day like little winds that only ma...

Bright Bits . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 8 May 1886

Bright Bits . —The gods have made only two perfect things : a woman and a rose . —Anon . —In a sensible family , nobody ever hears the word shall and shant : nobody commands and nobody obeys , but all conspire and joyfully co-operate . — Emerson . —What God made woman able to do , that He intends she should do . — Wendell Phillips . —It is a duty to one s self to try and make perfect what one loves . —M . de Gtterin . —Let us have the true woman , the adorner , the hospitable , the religious heart , and no lawyer need be called in to write stipulations , the cunning clauses of provision , of the strong investitures ; for woman moulds the law-giver and writes the law . —Emerson ,

A BIRTHDAY PABTY IN THE WEST INDIES . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 8 May 1886

A BIRTHDAY PABTY IN THE WEST INDIES . Tom s nurse , or Nana , as all West India nurses were called , was a tall negress , very dignified and imposing in her manners , and so good we loved her dearly . She always wore a black alpaca gown , a white apron covering the whole front of it , a white handkerchief crossed over her bosom , and one tied ovor her hair . Her long gold ear-rings were her only ornaments . These rings were very interesting , because Nana often announced to u . that she had lost a friend and was wearing deep mourning . This meant that she had covered her ear-rings with black silk neatly sewed on . They were mourn-ful-looking objects then , I assure you . I cannot describe all the servants , odd as they were , nor give you any idea of their way of talking—Creole , Danish and broken English—but I must mention our butler , or horseman , Christian Uteudahl , the most important member of the household in his own opinion . As soon as the party was decided on . Christian a...

The Caricature Plant . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 8 May 1886

The Caricature Plant . BY M . A . One of the most remarkable plants in the whole vegetable kingdom is that known to botanists as the Justieia Pkta , which has also been well named The Caricature Plant . At first sight it appears to be a heavy , large-leaved plant , with purple blossoms , chiefly remarkable for the light yellow centers of its dark green leaves , which cause them to look as if some acid had been spilled upon them and taken the color out wherever it had touched . As I stood looking at this plant and thinking what a sickly , blighted appearance the queer yellow stains gave it , I was suddenly impressed with the fact that the plant was making faces at me . Still , unaccustomed as I was to seeing plants indulge in this strictly human amusement , I was slow to believe it . This curious shrub had indeed occupied itself in growing up in ridiculous caricatures of the human face divine , until it now stood , covered from the topmost leaf down , with the queerest faces imaginab...

AULTMAN , MILLER & CO ., AKRON , OHIO . [ Editorial correspondence of The Farm Implement News . ! The writer had occasion to visit the beautiful city of Akron , Ohio , a short time ago , and , availing himself of the opportunity offered , leisurely strolled through the various departments of the extensive Buckeye works of Aultman , Miller Ss Co and of course inspected their harvesting machines and methods of constructing same , with that sort of interest which one feels in a business that he has long pursued and finally dropped . This U an incorporated company , (* eo . W . Grouse being its president , andLewis Miller superintendent and general manager Mr . Aultmao , whose name stands first ( although he held no interest in the company since the year 1870 ) , died something over a year ago , while Mr .
