Mumford ' s Inquisition , [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 20 February 1902

Mumford s Inquisition , BBRY recently Prof . Mumford , the livestock expert at the Illinois experiment station mailed to about one thousand Illinois cattle feeders a category of questions calculated to extract from them Aiuch information regarding the feeding methods they are pursuing , his announced intention being to collaborate and publish the answers . This inquisition promises to have good results . Cattle feeding to be successful and profitable must be divorced from the time-honored corn-hauling method , and as Prof . Mumford is endeavoring to get the experienced men who have been and are making money his collaboration will be valuable for reference purposes and as an educational agent . * It is to be hoped that the feeders of the state will lose no time in forwarding their answers to the savant at Urbana air the rank and file of cattle feeders are hungry lor information of this nature .

oi the in of Fear the Land-SharKs . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 20 February 1902

oi the in of Fear the Land-SharKs . ^ tutors two Dakotas view an expected heavy Immigration this spring few land-sharks will embrace the opportunity to place people on worthless land a ? they did during the boom of 25 years ago . Says one writer on the topic : Whoaver is instrumental in getting an immigrant to take up poor land is guilty of a crime not only against humanity , but against the welfare of the state . Such a location means usually a long , unavailing struggle , with failure at the end—a half-fed family , with the poor-house always in sight . Yet land companies and speculators are busy in trying to settle immigrants on just sucli worthless lands . It would be a public benefit if some agency could be established for furnishing accurate information as to the quality of every unoccupied section in the state . The results to the commonwealth of such intelligent direction of the human currant now pouring in upon us would be of tho highest value .

k . ocky Mountain Winter . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 20 February 1902

k \ . ocky Mountain Winter . This winter has been unusually mild In the Rocky Mountain states . No snow has fallen to remain on the ground In the foothill ranges and plains east of the Rockies , and very little on the western slopes . Much of the livestock is yet on the range or meadow pastures , looking well and keeping healthy . Wyoming had two snow storms early in December that were unusually severe for that season of the year . The first came on suddenly , but livestock was in good condition , and the loss was relatively small . Subsequent warm weather has cleared the snow from the lower ranges . Utah people have actually been complaining of unseasonably warm weather and dusty roads , and some stockmen in that state are becoming anxious in regard to next season s ranges . However , there is plenty of time for an ample fall of snow , while it is almost a certaiuty that spring rains will give life and growth to tho grass . A late spring is predicted .

Farm Implements The Question Box A subscribsrof t i 3 Lira Sroos Wr > : iLD writes as follows : Would you dare open your Columns to a discussion of the merits and defects of farm machinery ? Dont do it without due consideration of the results . Dont do it because I ask it . But if you can see your way clearly to such a discussion , reserving the right to clip or refuse any or all communications , you would certainly do us farmers a great good . One ironclad rule should be at the top of the department that nothing would be considered excepting from bona-ilde subscribers . That would shut off implement manufacturers from free advertising . You seem to be so progressive I thought perhaps you had the desire to enlighten us on all branches of our business and I notice the comparison of ideas . as regards handling and feeding stock has been well started , the next questions are bow to raise the feed stuffs , and necessarily the best and most improved machinery has got to be con...
