Dr . Hardman Buys the Entire Belmont Farm Herd of Berkshires . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 March 1911

Dr . Hardman Buys the Entire Belmont Farm Herd of Berkshires . Mr . Loring Brown , manager of Belmont Farm , Smyrna , Ga ., writes us under date of February 18 th that on account of high priced land and lack of space here , we have sold our entire herd of Berkshires to Dr . W . B . Hardman , Commerce , Ga . I could hardly keep from crying when I loaded this lot of hogs , the best lot I ever owned at one time . Dr . Hardman is a first-class breeder , and believes in having only the best . We have met Dr . Hardman at several of the good public sales , and fully concur in all that Mr . Brown has said about him . Dr . Hardman nas the right idea , the best are none too good , and it pays to have only the best . We are glad to learn that Dr . Hardman has added this excellent lot of hogs to his already well established herd , and trust to have the pleasure of keeping in touch with the herd from now on .

The Champion Looks the Part [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 March 1911

The Champion Looks the Part We recently had the great pleasure of again seeing the undefeated Champion , Rivals Champion , at the home of his present owner , Mr . S . C . McCoun , Danville , Ind . The hog looks the part of the Champion that he is , and Sam says that Rival s Champion is a Champion by right of inheritance , from his Show-yard record , and the fact that he breeds Champions . Rival s Champisn is a great hog , and Mr . McCoun has taken the proper course to insure his future greatness . The boar is being mated with only high class and carefully selected sows . Most of them are daughters of Royal Goods Gth , a boar that Mr . McCoun formerly had at the head of his herd , and a boar -of the right type . Royal Goods 6 th was long and very deep , with an extremely wide back and heavy hams . He had extra good feet and legs , a good head , and although he was a hog of great scale and substance , he was chuck full of quality . He bred the right kind , and Mr . McCoun was fortunat...

One of the Good Old-Time Breed ers . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 March 1911

One of the Good Old-Time Breed ers . For many years Missouri led all states for the largest number of Berkshire breeders . The general extension of the breed has of late years changed this condition , but the state still has many of the old timers who are yet active breeders . Among the list are such men as N . H . Gentry , Harris & McMahan , Ralph Creighton , James Houk , etc ., etc . It is Mr . James Houk , Urich , Mo ., that we desire to especially mention at this time . Mr . Houk has bred Berkshires for years and he has bred many good ones . His Oxford Dukes and Golden Charmers are especially noted families . Mr . Houk is a very pleasant and reliable gentleman , a man who cares more for his word than he does for any amount of money , and Berkshire World readers can depend on any statement this gentleman makes regarding what he has to sell .

SALE DATES CLAIMED , 1911 . MARCH 8—C . A . Robinson , Kirksville , Mo . Berkshires . JUNE 7—M . J . Drushel , Millersburg , Ohio . Berkshires . The Last Big Sale of the Season . The last big sale of Berkshires for the season will be held at Kirksville , Mo ., on March 8 th , by the well-known Berkshire breeder , Mr . C . A . Robinson . Our field man recently looked this offering over , and it is his opinion that it is the best Mr . Robinson has made for a number of years . A large per cent of the sows are good-headed , in fact , there is a larger per cent of good-headed sows in this offering than in many others we have seen . The sows are all good-bodied and they are certainly bred in the very heighth of fashion . Many of them are daughters of Premier Longfellow Lee , a son of Premier Longfellow , and out of the dam of Prof . Curtiss great boar , Rival s Champion Best , a daughter of Lord Premier . These sows are bred to Masteripece Royal , a litter mate of the Gregory Farm Grand C...

The Helmuth Sale Very Satis -factory . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 March 1911

The Helmuth Sale Very Satisfactory . The day following the American Berkshire Congress sale , Mr . G . B Helmuth , Millersburg , Ohio , held a very satisfactory sale , mostly sows bred to Masterpiece Standard , Longfellow Premier C 2 d , Superb 4 th , or Handsome Lees Prince 2 d . The offering was far above the average . The attendance was very large , but unfortunately the sale pavilion was too small and not well lighted . It was almost Impossible to handle the bids on account of the crowded condition of the sale pavilion , and many of the visitors complained that they could not see the animals distinctly . Mr . Helmuth had secured the best accommodations available , and the crowd was much larger than had been anticipated . Had the sale pavilion been larger and better lighted , the average would doubtless have been higher . The bidding was spirited from first to last and 75 head sold for an average of $ 62 . 55 . White Horse Farm , Paoli , Pa ., were fortunate in securing No . 78 ,...

PARTRIDGE WYANDOTTES [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 March 1911

PARTRIDGE WYANDOTTES The Aristocrats of the Poultry World . I believe that everyone who is acquainted with Partridge Wyandottes to any extent will admit that they are the most beautiful of the utility breeds and one of the most useful of the beauty breeds . You will seldom see anything handsomer than the combination of rich cherry red and glossy greenish black of the males , and the exquisite penciling of black on mahogany of the females ; and when it comes to the general utility side of the question luey rank with the best of the American breeds in number of eggs laid , they mature quickly , have a fine textured meat , yellow skin and a most excellent flavor . I have bred Partridge Wyandottes along with at least six other popular varieties , and after carefully noting the egg production of the different pens , find that the Partridge Wyandotte is the best winter layer of them all , and it is for this reason that we are now breeding but this one variety on Sheffield Farm . They may ...

What He Says of Columbian Wyandottes is True . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 March 1911

What He Says of Columbian Wyandottes is True . Inwood , W . Va . Readers will note that I am using part of my advertising space in this issue for my Columbian Wyandottes . Now I don t want to say that the Columbian Wyandottes are the greatest layers , etc ., for such statements , though they be true , only leads the reader into confusion , but I do say that they are a good all around farm foul . I have carefully noted that they will range far out from the buildings in search of food , etc ., while some other breeds are inclined to stand around the feeding place . This one point alone should induce anyone In taking them up , as it insures health and vigor in the flock . I want to speak of The Berkshire World as an advertising medium . I ran a yearly contract with two of the best poultry Journals last season and I doubt if both brought me as much business as did my small ad in the World this winter . Of course , this is in different lines , and I have not had time to test it as a poul...

Partridge Wyandottes as Layers [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 March 1911

Partridge Wyandottes as Layers ( From The National Partridge Wyandotte Journal . ) For several years some of our Leghorn friends have seemed to think it their bounden duty to chaff us about Partridge Wyandottes and kindly advise us to change to a breed that would lay , and say a lot of nice things about laying machines . They would tell us that if beauty was what we wanted to breed for we had it , but when we talked of winter layers they simply smiled . Now we are going to mail some of them this copy of the Journal , and if they can beat this record made by seven Partridge Wyandottes , sent us by George W . Baldwin of West Liberty , Iowa , we will admit it and send them this paper one year free . Following is the record : December , 1908 , eggs laid 112 January , 1909 , 160 February , 1909 , 183 March , 1909 , 189 April , 1909 , 190 May , 1909 , 189 June , 1909 , i 69 July , 1909 , , 176 August , 1909 , 165 September , 1909 , 139 October , 1909 , 105 November , 1909 , 75 Total 1852 ...

Columbian Wyandottes [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 March 1911

Columbian Wyandottes The origin of this beautiful breed dates back to about twenty-five years ago , being produced by a cross or crosses with the light Brarha , White and Silver Laced Wyandottes , establishing a breed with the stamina and beautiful ermine markings of the light Brama and grand Blocky Wyandotte conformation . Their shape , color and markings make them the most attractive and catchy breed of the age , as the Poultry World has been unable to produce in any other breed such beautiful black and white points . As a general purpose fowl they stand on their own merit , without the unhealthy boosting of some large breeder . They mature early and as egg producers are not to be excelled , often beginning to lay large brown eggs at the age of five and one-half to six months . As a market fowl they are among the best , having a round plump body from the time they weigh two pounds to maturity , making a most excellent table fowl , and we , as breeders , challenge the world to prod...
