The Copper King Company, of Clif ton, blew in their new 75-ton furnace last week. The Virginia house of delegates has passed a bill making Jannary 29th, General 11. E. Lee's birthday, a legal holiday. Yavapai county will bear all the ex pense incurred in the relief of surviv ors of the Walnut Grove dam disaster, and all contributions donated by pri vate individuals are being returned by the committee. H. S. Van Buren, of New York, president of the Walnut Grove Water Storage Company is in Prescott, ex annning into the' causes of the late disaster. The question of rebuilding the dam will not be considered until after his return to the East. The Northwestern Live Stock Jour nal says there is every reason to ex pect better prices and better condi tions for cattle raisers in the near fa ture. There would never be so many open mouths to utter slander if there were not so many open ears to receive it. Bishop Hall. There is again talk of establishing smelting works in Los Angeles. The Preston system of working ores by the heat from crude petroleum is that which is being considered. A nurse girl in St. Louis has devel oped an original turn of mind by stealing the baby she had in charge and holding it in pawn for wages al leged to be due her. The project ef extending the Sutro tunnel westward for a mile is again being discussed. Many believe that there is rich ground in that direction that the tunnel will open. A curious fact about cigarette smoking is that nearly double as many cigarettes are smoked during July, August and September, as during any other three months of the year. Professor Wiggins, of Ottawa, Canada, sounds the warning for the 17th, 18th and 19th of March in Europe and on the American coast from the 21st to the 23d.
